The Syllabus: COVID-19 on campus (cont.)

(The latest in a long series on how college campuses are dealing with COVID-19.)
I ve been watching higher ed COVID-19 dashboards for nearly a year now, and the recent numbers at local campuses honestly look pretty good.

I m not kidding! Case counts are way, way down from a month ago. Clusters aren t clustering like they were in the fall. It s clear from the number ofschoolsthat have announced plans for in-person commencements in May that higher ed generally thinks the worst of the pandemic is behind it.
That said, COVID-19 hasn t vanished — far from it. Duke University got swamped by a COVID-19 surge after mostly avoiding it for a semester and a half.  ....

Wake Forest University plans for in-person commencement ceremonies

The past week has been a pretty good one for Wake Forest University students.
On Friday, the Winston-Salem university lifted most of the remaining campus restrictions aimed at slowing the spread of COVID-19 among its students.
The university followed that up Tuesday by telling students that it plans to hold commencement in person in May.
In a message to 2021 graduates, Wake Forest said most undergraduate commencement activities will take place May 16 or May 17 — or possibly both days.
One of those events is what President Nathan Hatch called a large, celebratory event for seniors at Truist Field — the Wake Forest football stadium — that will be a high-energy event that you won’t want to miss. ....

Colleges and universities across the state are betting on a more complete return to in-person learning this fall, but it’s not clear if those plans will come to fruition at this stage of the pandemic.
The University of Illinois System — with campuses in Urbana-Champaign, Chicago and Springfield — announced Tuesday that it anticipates the majority of classes and labs to be held face to face next school year.
Noting exceptions for larger lecture-based courses, which will continue to be offered online, system President Tim Killeen pointed to increased COVID-19 testing and rising vaccine supply as key factors that support the decision. ....

Looking back: The collegiate transition to remote learning

Payne Horning / WRVO News
About one year ago, the World Health Organization officially declared the coronavirus outbreak a global pandemic, and life around the world and in New York came to a screeching halt.
March 9 was the first warm day in central New York last year and students at Syracuse University couldn’t resist the sunshine. Senior Josh Shub-Seltzer skipped class and spent the entire day on the lawn outside Psi Upsilon’s fraternity house and even watched the sunset from its steps at the day’s end.
“I spent the entire day on my front lawn hanging out with friends… and part of me was like, I should make the most of this just in case,” he said. “I m very glad I did.” ....
