COVID learning loss requires a national edtech response

And most importantly: Lead with data.
A group of nonprofits, led by the EdTech Evidence Exchange, recently collected and reviewed as many estimates of state, local and federal edtech spending as they could locate. The results were disturbing. Do we collectively spend $26 billion per year on education technology including content, licenses, devices, connectivity, training, professional development and support, or do we spend $41 billion? Nobody can say for sure.
In addition, we know from companies such as LearnPlatform, which have unique insight into edtech usage in a small but growing subset of school districts, that a significant proportion of dollars currently spent on education technology are wasted. Many edtech products and programs are purchased with the best of intentions, then rarely if ever used.   ....

Civics education — like barbecue — should not be one-recipe-fits-all

There’s not a lot that right and left agree about right now, but one big thing is the sorry state of civil debate. Whether the fault lies with social media, institutional erosion, or something else, the result is the same: a nation of people who aren’t good at listening to ideas they don’t already hold, assessing them thoughtfully, and discussing them in respectful terms.
That helps explain the surge of interest in revitalizing civics education although that interest too takes different shapes and is expressed in different terms on left and right and around the country. ....

Editorial: WVU needs to assert self against WV Legislature — now more than ever

The West Virginia House of Delegates meets on Opening Day on Jan. 13.
Perry Bennett/WV Legislature
Since the legislative session began on Feb. 10, more than 700 bills have been introduced over the two chambers of the legislature. They range on a variety of topics, such as selling alcohol earlier on Sundays to eliminating the requirement that schools be closed on election days, as well as many topics in between.
Of course, only a handful of these pieces of legislation become law each year, but their presence alone is enough to warrant careful discussion on how they would impact everyday West Virginians. ....

Pamplin Media Group - City Club examines impact of pandemic on schools

City Club of Portland examines impact of pandemic on schools
The program will address disparities in education, which have grown worse during the COVID-19 crisis.
Eleven months ago, the closure of Oregon K-12 schools launched what for many parents and children has been a bizarre and incredibly disruptive, difficult experience, one that some call tragic.
Already significant, disparities in school achievement based on race, ethnicity and wealth have grown. Many parents, those with the financial means, have set up pods of self-funded learning for their children, paying tutors or even full-time teachers.
Other parents have had to cut back on work hours to help their child learn remotely, thus increasing inequities. ....
