DETROIT – Wayne County Deputy Chief Raphael Washington has been appointed as the county’s new sheriff, replacing the beloved late Sheriff Benny Napoleon.
On Friday, Washington was selected by a three-person panel consisting of Chief Judge Freddie Burton, County Clerk Cathy Garrett and Prosecutor Kym Worthy.
Washington’s appointment will last through to the 2022 special primary and general elections. According to county officials, Washington must file to run in those elections.
The sheriff position became vacant after Napoleon died on Dec. 17 due to complications with COVID-19. Napoleon was reelected in 2020, with his new term slated to begin on Jan. 1. ....

Applicants for Wayne County sheriff to continue interviews Friday
Detroit  Wayne County officials were scheduled Friday to finish interviewing the 14 applicants vying to replace Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon, who died last month following a battle with COVID-19.
According to Michigan election law, if a county sheriff is elected but dies before the new term starts, the vacancy shall be filled within 15 days after the beginning of the term for which he was elected.
State law empowers the county clerk, prosecutor and chief probate judge to appoint people to elected positions if the official vacates the seat before the term is over. ....

William Hartmann felt like he was stuck in a “Mission Impossible” movie when he left a Wayne County Board of Canvassers meeting in Detroit in November.
Law enforcement advised him not to return home and instead escorted him, with just the clothes on his back, to a friend’s house for safety.
“I was scared,” Hartmann told The Epoch Times. “[The police] actually had people stationed outside in different locations, watching, in case anything happened. They were there for three or four days.”
Hartmann said he didn’t venture outside for a week. ....
