LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - Since 2019, Lubbock County has used the Tarrant County Medical Examiner for autopsy services when the Commissioners Court decided to forgo hiring its own ME. Officials maintain the process has been a good one, despite reports of wrongdoing by a Tarrant County employee and the ME himself.
“We have the utmost trust in the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office,” Lubbock County Judge Curtis Parrish said. “Dr. [Nizam] Peerwani is widely recognized as being one of, if not, the expert in the field of medical pathology. So, we have very much a high level of trust.” ....

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - Our KCBD Investigates team is looking at the Texas Open Meetings Act and the role it plays in transparency and accountability.
The Texas Open Meetings Act, which is chapter 551 of the Government code, states that “every regular, special, or called meeting of a governmental body shall be open to the public.”
It was written to require Texas Governmental bodies, whether they be boards, commissions, city councils or even the legislature itself, do their deliberation in public and in meetings that are publicly posted. ....

Lubbock can ease COVID restrictions due to lower hospitalizations


Lubbock County Judge Curtis Parrish received a letter from the Texas Department of State Health Services on Tuesday saying Lubbock and the surrounding counties can ease COVID-19 restrictions as hospital conditions have improved.
City officials announced later that 109 new COVID-19 infections and 143 recoveries. They also announced a 10.83% COVID-19 hospitalization rate for Monday  the seventh consecutive day that Lubbock was below the 15% hospitalization threshold. 
The new infections raises Lubbock County s total case count to 47,132, with 1,545 cases listed as active and 44,911 listed as recovered.
No deaths were reported Tuesday, which keeps the county s COVID-linked fatalities at 676.
As of Tuesday, 102 people were hospitalized by the disease with 30 patients in the ICU. Officials reported a combined 13 open hospital beds and 23 patients holding for beds at University Medical Center and Covenant Health System. ....

Lubbock County swears in elected officials


Lubbock County s newly elected and re-elected officials have taken their oaths of office, in a ceremony Friday morning.
Judge Phillip Hays now presides over the 99th District Court. Retiring District Jude Bill Sowder administered the oath.
It s very humbling to understand and know the voters of Lubbock County have spoken and have decided that i m the person they want to be the judge in the 99th District Court, Judge Hays said. I hope to give anyone that comes in their day in court, their opportunity to be heard, and to listen and rule fairly.  
Terrence Kovar was sworn in as county commissioner for precinct 1. He replaces Bill McCay, who retired after 16 years. ....

Judge Ruben Reyes dies from COVID-19 complications
Lubbock has lost a distinguished judge, leader, and friend with the death of Texas 72nd District Court Judge Ruben Reyes, County Judge Curtis Parrish said. Reyes died from complications of COVID-19. He was 56.
Governor Perry appointed Reyes to the bench in 2006. He was then a partner at Hurley, Reyes and Guinn. The Honorable Judge Reyes won re-election multiple times since then, to the court that covers both Lubbock and Crosby counties. 
COVID-19 vaccines rolling out nationwide
Lubbock should get its first round of COVID-19 vaccines this week after the FDA granted emergency approval of the Pfizer vaccine. Frontline medical workers will be the first to get it.  ....
