The Engagement review: a tour de force on the fight for same-sex marriage

The New Yorker contributor Michael Shaw’s cartoon of 1 March 2004 would have been one candidate. Its arch question, “Gays and lesbians getting married – haven’t they suffered enough?”, seems to encapsulate how an unlikely issue, consistently championed, achieved a broader vision of “gay liberation” than many dreamed could be attained so rapidly.
Thanks to works of scholarship like Charles Kaiser’s The Gay Metropolis and The Deviant’s War by Eric Cervini, it has become clear that the seemingly impossible is often achievable. With The Engagement, Issenberg adds to such proof that one can write LGBTQ+ history in a way that is engaging, authoritative and impeccably sourced. ....

This is a big book, 425 pages before the notes, about the big changes that transformed New York over the last five decades: spiritually, by making it “more like America and less like what it had always been”, and physically amid “the most dramatic peacetime transformation” of any city “since Haussmann rebuilt Paris”.
Thomas Dyja came to New York in 1980 to attend Columbia, fell in love with the city and stayed through five mayoral administrations, from Ed Koch to Bill DeBlasio. ....

In the Pandemic Present, a Literary Tour of Greenwich Village's Past

In the Pandemic Present, a Literary Tour of Greenwich Village’s Past
From the quirky brownstones to the birth of queer New York and the tangle of streets themselves, everything about this neighborhood has defied the grid from the beginning.

When my boyfriend and I moved from our pocket-size Greenwich Village apartment last October, our cat, Evita Carol, made a sound I’ll never forget. After all of the furniture and four years of ephemera had been slammed into a truck parked illegally on the corner of Bleecker and Thompson, I let her out — and she howled. It was a guttural cry, a mew-tinged eulogy for a place she once recognized and which now lay empty before her, gutted. ....

Books, Films, TV Shows & Podcasts: 9 LGBT+ History Recommendations

Recommended by Jen Manion
These two books are among my favourites – I teach them all the time and they’re also really accessible. One is
Transgender History by Susan Stryker (Seal Press, 2017), which is an introductory overview of the transgender rights movement in contemporary US society.
The other is probably lesser known, but it’s called
Queer Injustice (Beacon Press, 2011) and it was co-authored by historians, lawyers and activists. It’s a beautiful synthesis of queer history and experience in the US in relation to the criminal justice system. And part of what it does is capture a more diverse group of our communities’ experiences. But it also reminds [us] that, up until very recently, being queer was criminalised: people were incarcerated for their love, and that it’s actually just a very new phenomenon that homosexuality does not subject one to criminalisation, even in modern times. ....

The Death of the Gay Bar

Gay Bar: Why We Went Out
Jeremy Atherton Lin
My favorite bar in San Francisco, Twin Peaks Tavern, is in danger of closing. Known as the glass coffin, for both its large plate glass windows and its older clientele, it was the first bar I went to when I moved to the West Coast in 2013 as a bright-eyed PhD student. Its Tiffany lampshades and cozy interior welcomed me in. Plopping myself onto one of its cushioned benches and looking out on Castro Street, I remember feeling overwhelmingly at home and embedded in queer history.
In a world in which queer people are ever more accepted and rigid identity categories make less and less sense, what is the purpose of gay bars? Do we still need them? ....
