TUESDAY, March 16, 2021 SP: RHP Carson Montgomery (0-1, 0.00 ERA) Florida State won last season’s game in Gainesville 2-0 behind a dominant pitching performance from Antonio Velez and Parker Messick. Both players set career-highs at the time with seven strikeouts. The win snapped an 11-game losing streak for FSU in the series and was the first time that Mike Martin, Jr. faced the Gators as head coach. At the time, Florida was No. 1 in the country and the last remaining undefeated team in the nation. The season was canceled due to COVID-19 three days later. Carson Montgomery will pitch for Florida State, his first action in over two weeks. The freshman from Windermere was slated to start FSU’s midweek games against Mercer and USF but both were postponed. Montgomery opened the season in the weekend rotation and has not allowed an earned run this year. ....
BLACKSBURG, Va. – Florida State (6-6, 4-5 ACC) had a season-high 18 hits and tied a season high with 14 runs, beating No. 18 Virginia Tech (9-5, 5-4) 14-7 Sunday afternoon to clinch the series at English Field. The Seminoles hit four home runs and had eight extra base hits in the contest as Conor Grady improved to 2-1 on the season. Parker Messick, FSU’s Friday night starting pitcher, was Sunday’s designated hitter and went 3-for-5 with a solo home run in the first inning, his first career at-bat. Catcher Mat Nelson, hitting in the cleanup spot for the first time this year, hit a three-run home run in the first inning that started the scoring for the Noles. ....
Arizona 0, Florida State 2 Kathryn Sandercock started and pitched 3.1 innings for the Noles in the circle as she allowed five hits and no runs with one strikeout. Caylan Arnold came in with one out in the fourth and pitched a marvelous 3.2 innings, allowing no hits with eight strikeouts. She combined for 18 strikeouts in nine innings of work against Arizona. Florida State put the first run on the board in the bottom of the second inning. With one out Sydney Sherrill reached on a walk. She then advanced to third on a Devyn Flaherty single to right-center. One batter later, Josie Muffley laid down a sacrifice bunt, scoring Sherrill from third. ....
BLACKSBURG, Va. – No. 18 Virginia Tech (9-4, 5-3 ACC) held Florida State (5-6, 3-5) scoreless to even the series Saturday, beating the Seminoles 5-0 at English Field. FSU pitching held the Hokies to just four hits, but three defensive errors led to three unearned runs in the loss. Starting pitcher Bryce Hubbart (2-2) threw 4.0 innings, allowing three hits and striking out six. He hit three batters. Virginia Tech scored a run in the first and second innings before posting a three-spot in the fifth inning to provide the final margin. FSU’s bullpen allowed a hit and struck out four without allowing an earned run over 4.0 innings. ....
