2021 New Orleans Saints Free Agents: Stay or Go? - Sports Illustrated New Orleans Saints News, Analysis and More

Jan 22, 2021
It feels like a new era is on the horizon with the New Orleans Saints. At least that's what the writing on the wall indicates with so much personnel leaving for bigger opportunities and a good bit of roster turnover expected. Naturally, at the center of this all is what Drew Brees ultimately desires to do in the future. All signs point to retirement, which ignites a variety of feelings among fans. Sean Payton is pretty optimistic about the future, and he should be.
The Saints do have a ton of decisions to make on their players set to hit free agency. While some should be no-brainers like Lil'Jordan Humphrey (ERFA) and J.T. Gray (RFA), the big ones to solve for are in their unrestricted pool. Here's some initial thoughts on where the priorities should go.

The Saints Key Players to have Larger Roles in 2021
The New Orleans Saints had one of the NFL's deepest rosters in 2020. With salary cap issues facing the team, several players will have prominent roles in 2021.

The New Orleans Saints face a myriad of crucial offseason decisions this offseason. New Orleans could be as much as $97 million dollars over the projected NFL salary cap for 2021. General Manager Mickey Loomis and his front office staff are geniuses at maneuvering the cap to put a competitive team on the field, but the Saints are still likely going to part ways with some important players this offseason.

NFC Divisional: New Orleans Saints Snap Counts and Observations - Sports Illustrated New Orleans Saints News, Analysis and More

Jan 19, 2021
There is no feel-good story in how the Saints season finished. New Orleans simply didn't meet their season expectations in what is likely the final time we'll see Drew Brees. This team preached the emphasis of 'Super Bowl or bust' going into the season, but got halted against the Bucs in the Divisional Round. Here's our final look at the snap counts and playing time percentages for their 2020 season from the game against the Bucs.
Offense
Ryan Ramczyk, Andrus Peat, Cesar Ruiz, Erik McCoy - 65 (100%)
Brees didn't take any sacks, but also was hurried on some throws. The Saints averaged 4.9 yards/play and got 104 rushing yards. They were 6-of-11 on third down and finished with 294 total yards of offense.

With the Baltimore Ravens and New Orleans Saints eliminated from playoff contention, only one regular starting and active Illini alum in the NFL has a chance to reach the Super Bowl. If you’re a casual NFL fan looking for a team to root for on Championship Sunday, look no further than the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Ravens had their second straight road playoff game when they went to western New York to take on the AFC East champs Buffalo Bills. Baltimore struggled in a windy game and couldn’t get much going offensively, losing 17-3.

Saints' defensive line aims to disrupt Bucs' Brady once more

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — For all the extraordinary talent the Saints and Buccaneers have at quarterback, running back and receiver, defensive end Cameron Jordan figures that what happens in the trenches will be the decisive factor in their divisional-round playoff clash.
Recent history backs him up.

Last week, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had to do some emergency scouting on a quarterback they had barely seen before. Washington's Taylor Heinicke, he of one career NFL start and one pass against the Buccaneers in 2018, was expected to get some action in relief of Alex Smith in the Wild Card game at FedExField. Instead he played the whole game and kept the Football Team competitive in an eventual 31-23 Bucs win. It was also Tampa Bay's first exposure to the likes of Antonio Gibson, Terry McLaurin, Chase Young and Montez Sweat.

NFC Wild Card: New Orleans Saints Snap Counts and Observations - Sports Illustrated New Orleans Saints News, Analysis and More

Jan 12, 2021
The Saints are marching on to the Divisional Playoff Round after taking care of the Bears 21-9 on Sunday afternoon. It was a game that was a bit nerve-racking for many, but New Orleans overcame some sluggish offensive play and was complimented well by a strong defensive effort to get the win. We take a further look at the snap counts and playing time percentages, as we wrap a bow on this game.
Offense
Andrus Peat, Ryan Ramczyk, Cesar Ruiz, Erik McCoy, Terron Armstead - 84 (100%)
It was a mixed bag from the interior offensive line, as Brees was sacked just once, but was also under duress on a good bit of his dropbacks. New Orleans ended up finishing with 123 rushing yards, but most of that came in the second half.

Late-Breaking Injury Impact on Chicago Bears, New Orleans Saints - Sports Illustrated Chicago Bears News, Analysis and More

The next-man-up philosophy in the NFL prevails in case of injuries.
Over the last week, Bears coach Matt Nagy invoked the tired old phrase in relation to Roquan Smith's injury. He was ruled out on Saturday after being called questionable initially for game day.
"I mean, he's playing on another level," Nagy said. "And so, when you lose that, that's a part of football.
"And I think whoever the next guy up that has to step up and go in there and do their thing, we understand that."
The next guy up in this instance is Josh Woods, who played more of the regular-season finale against Green Bay than Smith did.
