Women of Excellence: Elana Johnson honoured for elevating midwifery

This is the fourth in a series spotlighting this year’s YMCA Women of Excellence award recipients
In the 1970s, when Elana Johnson began her work helping pregnant women, she was the only midwife in the Forest City. There were a handful, maybe 70, like her in the entire province.

That’s a contrast to today, when there are more than 1,000 Ontario midwives, and midwifery is a regulated profession.
It’s for her work as an advocate for midwives that Johnson has been named a woman of excellence this year. ....

Revive Live kicks off with a line-up of Fanshawe grads

This Saturday, Music Industry Arts (MIA) grads, Sarina Haggarty and Texas King will take the stage at London Music Hall to kick off a new initiative to support live music.
Saturday’s concert is the first in a series of concerts put on by Revive Live, an initiative created in part by the London Music Office and Tourism London. Each week, local artists will take to the stage at a local music venue. The concerts will be streamed live online for free for anyone wishing to attend.
“Prior to the pandemic, London’s live music industry was growing steadily,” said music industry development officer for The City of London, Cory Crossman. “The live music industry was one of the hardest hit by this pandemic and will be one of the last to recover. Revive Live will jumpstart a portion of the local economy offering support to the live music sector on the road to recovery.” ....

In 1865, Henry Highland Garnet (December 23, 1815 – February 13, 1882) an African American abolitionist and orator becomes  the first black minister to preach to the United States House of Representatives.
In 1900,     For a Lincoln birthday celebration, James Weldon Johnson writes the lyrics for “Lift Every Voice and Sing”. With music by his brother, J. Rosamond, the song is first sung by 500 children in Jacksonville, Fla. It will become known as the “Negro National Anthem”.
In 1903, American baritone opera singer Todd Duncan, the first performer of the role of Porgy in Porgy and Bess, is born in Danville, Kentucky. Duncan would be the first African American to sing with a major opera company and the first black person to sing in an opera all white cast, when he performed the role of Tonio in Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci with the New York City Opera. ....

At some point during the hectic composition of “Rhapsody in Blue,” one of George Gershwin’s masterpieces of 20th-century American music, the maestro got impatient with the process. The piece, which was to debut in just a few short weeks, would eventually run to 22,000 notes over 500 measures, after all.
In Gershwin’s handwritten score of “Rhapsody,” he sketched out the notation for his piano solo but left a small section blank in the second draft, as by then copyists were helping notate each change that he was making as the piece came together. That solo section stayed blank in the third and final score arranged by Ferde Grofé, with only a note to conductor Paul Whiteman to “wait for nod” when Gershwin launched into his solo. ....
