While road crews continue to assess the damage to Highway 1 at Rat Creek in the Big Sur area, Caltrans is modifying the highway s closure boundaries.
Initially closed last Tuesday from Ragged Point in the south to Fullers Point in the north, the southern closure is being moved up to Willow Creek Road and the northern closure is being moved down to South Coast Center.
During last week s rainstorms, a debris flow washed out a section of the highway near Rat Creek, leaving a 150-foot chasm in the roadway. The area is below the Dolan Fire burn scar. ....

Governor Gavin Newsom Issues State Of Emergency For Monterey & San Luis Obispo Counties

Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency for Monterey and San Luis Obispo counties due to the damage caused by the recent winter storms. The bad weather has caused flooding and mud and debris flow, forcing the evacuation of thousands of residents in those counties. The storm even washed out a portion of Highway 1 in Monterey County last week, creating a yawning gap in the roadway. The emergency proclamation instructs Caltrans to formally request immediate assistance through the Federal Highway Administration’s Emergency Relief Program and the OES to assist local governments.

A long stretch of California s Highway 1, the famously scenic route that snakes along the Big Sur coastline, remains closed after a section of the road washed away amid heavy rain, creating a 150-foot gap at Rat Creek about 20 miles south of Big Sur.
Caltrans said in a statement Monday that while work is underway to repair the road, and the stretch of road closed is decreasing from 44 miles to 22.8 miles, there is no current timeline for the complete reopening of road.
The northern limit of the closure is now located at South Coast Center near Post Mile 34 and the Esalen Institute. The southern closure, currently at Ragged Pont, will be moved north to Willow Creek Road at Post Mile 11.2 on Monday at 6 p.m., Caltrans spokesperson Kevin Drabinski said. ....
