New Hampshire is likely headed into an early spring drought despite recent rain and snow, according to the latest national forecast – and state officials are already warning of the potential drinking water impacts.
The state and much of the region saw a severe drought for much of last year, and state officials say key indicators, like stream levels and rainfall, never got back above average throughout the winter.
“Even with these rain events that we’ve had come through, there has not been enough rain in them to get us to where we need to be,” said state water division director Tom O’Donovan in an interview with water managers this week. ....

Portland school fears Evergreens mascot tied to lynching
Ida B. Wells-Barnett High School wants to swap Trojan mascot for evergreen tree.
The adoption of a new mascot for Ida B. Wells-Barnett High School was put on pause, after concerns about potential connotations of lynching.
After adopting a new namesake earlier this year, the Southwest Portland high school also wants to ditch its Trojan mascot. A committee comprised of students, staff and community members suggested the evergreens as the school s new mascot.
Evergreens are characterized by the life-giving force of their foliage, the strength of their massive trunk, and the depth of their roots in an individual tree and as a forest of trees, Ellen Whatmore, a teacher and mascot committee member at Wells-Barnett High School said, reading from a resolution. They provide shelter and sustenance. They have histories that preclude us and will continue in perpetuity after we are no more. ....

EDWARDSVILLE Two men have been charged with several theft-related felonies Wednesday, including stealing from the State Park Fire Department in January.
Joseph T. Wells, 35, of St. Ann, Missouri, and Aaron D. Jackson, 40, of O’Fallon, Illinois, were each charged March 31 with possession of burglary tools and theft under $500 (second subsequent offense), Class 4 felonies. Wells also was charged with theft from coin-operated machine (second subsequent offense), a Class 4 felony.
The case was presented by the Madison County Sheriff’s Department. The State Park Fire Protection District includes both Madison and St. Clair counties. ....
