Even though parts of New Hampshire saw intense rain Wednesday night, experts say it wasn't nearly enough to combat worsening drought conditions. The latest drought map released Thursday shows most of the state abnormally dry. “If we measure from the calendar year, from January, that captures snowpack plus spring rain, we're about five inches short,” Tom O’Donovan, water division director for the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services. Going back a full year, precipitation is down about a foot. While some water bodies, like Lake Winnipesaukee, are in good shape now, there are concerns.“We've got our minimum outflows going and Winnipesaukee will do what it does, for the rest of the season. So, it'll go in to drop unless we get some steady precipitation over the next couple months,” O’Donovan said.If that doesn't happen, the lake could drop by as much as a foot by the end of the summer. Contributing to the issues is that trees have leafed out, which can make it difficult to replenish ground and surface waters.“It's like a giant umbrella went up over New Hampshire, because the trees’ leaves capture a lot of that rain. They hold it and then they evaporate it or evapotranspiration for our STEM kids that are out there,” O’Donovan said.O'Donovan said people don’t have to look far to find signs in nature that the drought is worsening.“This is a typical hayfield in southern New Hampshire and you can see even though it's green, it's thin. The growth is really thin,” O’Donovan said.Homeowners might have to make some difficult choices when it comes to their gardens.“It's also the year to say, 'These are the plants I'm going to take care of and I'll water those individually,'” O’Donovan said.As the lack of precipitation continues, DES officials expect more shallow wells will start to run dry.Anyone with a dried-out well can contact DES and ask about the drought assistance program.See more resources available from DES.
