manich@leaderherald.com JOHNSTOWN The Common Council is poised to adopt a state-mandated Police Reform Plan at its monthly business meeting at 6 p.m. Monday at City Hall. The plan required by the state by April 1 has been worked on for several months by the Johnstown Police Department, Chief David Gilbo and his officers. Mayor Vern Jackson said Friday the plan, taking a critical look at how the local police force is run and can be changed, meets the standards required by the state. “I think he did an excellent job,” Jackson said of Gilbo. The council will hold a public hearing on the plan prior to adoption. ....
aonyon@leaderherald.com GLOVERSVILLE Since the start of the pandemic through Tuesday, 14,100 nursing home residents statewide have died of the coronavirus. Of those individuals, 46 residents of Fulton County nursing homes and 60 residents of Montgomery County nursing homes have died. A report issued by state Attorney General Letitia James on Jan. 28 found that a larger number of nursing home residents died from the COVID-19 than had been publicly reported by the state Department of Health. The report indicated those numbers may have been undercounted by as much as 50 percent. State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker in response issued a statement on Jan. 28 saying that statewide coronavirus deaths have been accurately reported, with the data on deaths in nursing homes and at hospitals reported separately. ....

manich@leaderherald.com JOHNSTOWN The Wells Nursing Home in the city was among the first facilities in Fulton County to receive Pfizer’s new COVID-19 vaccine during a daylong clinic conducted Monday. Both nursing home staff and residents were among those receiving the vaccine from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., according to Wells Administrator Neal VanSlyke. “I think it’s a great opportunity to have residents get back to normalcy,” he said Monday. VanSlyke said the vaccines administered Monday by CVS Pharmacy at his facility represents “positivity” being demonstrated in the face of COVID. The nursing home official said that a couple weeks ago, the Pfizer COVID vaccine was approved by the Food & Drug Administration and a vaccine schedule was commenced with long-term care facilities. ....
