The Postmaster General's New Attack on the Mail is a Fig Leaf for Privatization

Debby Szeredy, Executive Vice President of the American Postal Workers Union; and
Jonathan Smith, president of the New York Metro Postal Workers Union about their experiences defending rural post offices and city processing plants, in a panel sponsored by DSA4USPS, a subcommittee of the Democratic Socialist Labor Commission.

This plan was pushed out in a hurry as a pre-emptive strike before the Senate could vote to fill the open seats on the Postal Board of Governors with Biden’s nominees who are apparently all pro-public postal service, pro-democracy, pro-union, and unlikely to support key elements of a plan like this. ....

Guest View: FOOD for Lane County stimulates the fight against hunger

Tom Mulhern
The past year has demonstrated how important food assistance is during a time of crisis. It has also tested the strength and resilience of our local food assistance network.
One of the economic impacts of COVID-19 has been a significant increase in food insecurity in Lane County. Simply put, more people than ever are having trouble paying for all their living expenses and feeding their families, too.
At FOOD for Lane County, COVID-19’s first impact was on our food supply. We had to temporarily suspend food donations from local grocery stores last spring. By summer, we and the stores had figured out a safe way to resume picking up their food donations. However, they had fewer usable food items to donate because of the impact of COVID-19 on their businesses, and our grocery store collections last year were only 60% of pre-pandemic levels.   ....

These Three Elected Officials Aren't Resigning in the Face of Ugly Scandals and High-Profile Calls for Their Departure

Not so long ago, Oregon politicians awash in scandal knew when to resign.
U.S. Sen. Bob Packwood (R-Ore.) resigned in 1995 as he faced expulsion from the Senate for sexual misconduct. Just five years ago, Gov. John Kitzhaber resigned a month into his fourth term as he faced allegations of influence peddling by his fiancée.
But that was the past, before President Donald Trump weaponized shamelessness and crowds deployed moral indignation so often that some politicians developed an immunity.
The present may be shame-free for now.
A notable trio of elected officials in Oregon face prominent calls for their resignation for misdeeds that once might have compelled them to leave the limelight red-faced. ....

Are They 'Patriots'? Behind Trump's Scheme For A Far-Right Third Party

Donald Trump, the
Wall Street Journal reports, is mulling the idea of forming a third party in his own political image, and calling it the Patriot Party. The report cites White House insiders who said the departing ex-president discussed the matter with several aides and other people close to him last week.
Patriot, however, is not just any old name. It s a self-descriptive name that has long been used by the conspiracist Bircherite radical right, for decades a cauldron of extremist behavior ranging from Oklahoma City to the Bundy standoffs to the January 6 Capitol insurrection, spawning such movements as militias and sovereign citizens and inspiring numerous acts of violence. It s an unmistakable dogwhistle to the American extremist right. ....
