CLEVELAND, Ohio – Former state Rep. John Barnes Jr., a Democrat, on Thursday announced his candidacy for the 11th Congressional District, making five candidates in the Democratic primary so far for Rep. Marcia Fudge’s soon-to-be vacated seat.
Barnes’ entry adds to a growing list of entrants into the heavily Democratic district. Fudge, who is awaiting confirmation to serve as President Joe Biden’s secretary of housing and urban development, has occupied the seat since 2008.
“I have watched lately with great dismay as disruptive elements have infiltrated and eroded the very foundation of our democracy; challenging the values we hold dear,” Barnes said in a statement. “These dark forces have pushed back against the struggle for equality, our health and well being and even challenged the truth itself.
