.- In Rembrandt’s 1638 etching “Adam and Eve in Paradise,” there are two symbols of good and evil. A dragon hovers over the couple as they contemplate the forbidden apple, representing the danger of temptation. And in the background, a little, rotund elephant romps in the sunlight, a sign of chastity and grace. The meaning of these symbols, while obscure today, would have been recognizable in 17th-century Europe. The dragon Rembrandt drew was a figment of his imagination. But the elephant looks surprisingly true to life. How did Rembrandt, who never traveled outside the Netherlands ....

Christie’s pulled out all the stops today, July 13, with a high-profile line-up of far-flung executives for a virtual call to announce the results of its wide-ranging business activities in the first half of 2021.
The total sales for the first six months of the year amounted to $3.5 billion, making it the auction house’s second-best half-year total in the past six years, and exceeding the 2019 equivalent by 13 percent.
Executives noted the significance of an influx of buyers and intense demand from Asia (which accounted for 39 percent of the value of auction sales worldwide), as well as the auction house’s plunge into sales of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) this year. They also highlighted how a recent spate of marathon hybrid sales have helped provide so ....

.- This summer, the McNay Art Museum presents two exhibitions of works on paper from American artists who helped shape the Conceptual and Op art movements; John Baldessari: California Dreaming and Optical Dazzle: Op Art at the McNay. This selection of works is offered at a timely moment, as two of the prolific artists featured died in 2020, just months apart from one another. These exhibitions also feature a new acquisition and a rarely-seen sculpture. On view through September 5, 2021 in the Charles Butt Paperworks Gallery, Optical Dazzle: Op Art at the McNay investigates the sensation of looking at art. Short for Optical Art, Op art emerged in the 1960s as a distinct style of art that creates the sense of illusion or movement. By the end of the decade, artist Richard Anuszkiewicz (pronounced Ah-nu-skey-vich) was one of the leading Op painters in America. The artist’s small, jewel-like prints on view at the McNay p ....
