A t nineteen, I moved to New York City for my first magazine internship. I was hired as a fact checker, and at the time, I knew little about the practice; it hadn’t yet gained the popularity it now enjoys, with regular headlines about “Fact-Checking the President in Real Time.” I interpreted fact-checking literally: journalists report facts, sometimes they make errors, and fact checkers clean everything up before the story is published.

Harper’s: every day for three months, I sat with three other young journalists, meticulously researching sentences that would appear in the upcoming issue. Since its introduction last year, the invite-only social media app Clubhouse has garnered a lot of buzz. Social media has been around long enough that everything old is new again, and unlike other apps that encourage users to share links or fragmentary thoughts in exchange for “likes,” Clubhouse facilitates voice conversations using your phone. Essentially, you can pick a topic and host your own panel discussion with friends. If you’re lucky, you get to join a conversation and share your thoughts with the likes of Elon Musk or any number of the site’s famous and influential users.
However, I regret to inform you that a growing number of journalists are deeply troubled by Clubhouse’s growing popularity. Why? It seems Clubhouse won’t accommodate their inner Big Brother. ....

Let's create a fact-checking army in Latin America and the Caribbean, says instructor of Knight Center's next MOOC

Brazilian journalist Cristina Tardáguila wants to build a global army of fact-checkers in Latin America and the Caribbean.“Anyone can become a fact-checker,” said Tardáguila, associate director of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN).
“We can even take it one step further, everybody can and should become a fact-checker. Because fact-checkers will not solve this issue [of disinformation] by themselves. If the capacity of assessing the veracity of content isn’t widely spread in our society, then we are going to be in trouble,” Tardáguila said.

Disinformation and Fact-Checking in Times of COVID-19: Register now for Knight Center's new free online course

As the world approaches 100 million cases of COVID-19 and surpasses 2 million deaths from the coronavirus worldwide, the Knight Center at the University of Texas at Austin and UNESCO are announcing an online training initiative to combat the other disease that is further aggravating the pandemic: the “disinfodemic.”
The MOOC (massive open online course) “Disinformation & Fact-Checking in Times of COVID-19 in Latin America and the Caribbean” will be taught in Spanish, Portuguese and Guaraní from Feb. 15 to March 14, 2021 on the Knight Center’s online learning platform.
