A Department of Homeland Security team focused on assessing the threat of weapons of mass destruction faces steep organizational and employee morale challenges just three years after its creation, a government watchdog said.
The Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office needs to improve its biodefense work and other key programs, Christopher Currie, director of homeland security and justice for the Government Accountability Office, told a House panel Friday.
The office ranked the lowest among DHS divisions in a 2019 employee morale report conducted by the Office of Personnel Management, with the department as a whole the lowest among similarly sized agencies. Lawmakers slam DHS watchdog following report calling for 'multi-year transformation'

Lawmakers on Wednesday grilled the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) inspector general following a preliminary report from a government watchdog painting a picture of a dysfunctional office charged with reviewing a number of national security agencies.
The Wednesday report issued by the Government Accountability Office includes an eyebrow-raising 21 recommendations for DHS’s Office of Inspector General, a significant figure for an entity charged with its own watchdog responsibilities.
DHS Inspector General Joseph Cuffari’s appearance before the House Homeland Security Committee follows a report by The Washington Post Tuesday finding that Cuffari rejected a recommendation from his career staff to investigate the role the Secret Service played in clearing protestors from Lafayette Square last June. ....

Auckland mum's warning to others after object thrown from motorway overbridge

“It gave me such a fright and gave the baby a fright, of course.”
Williams said the damage to her car could have been much worse: She already had a small crack in it and if the object had hit that spot, it could have shattered her entire windscreen.
Another person could have been given such a fright that they lost control of their vehicle and crashed, she said.

Danielle Williams said she saw about three youths standing on the Huruhuru Rd bridge before the object hit her car.
Williams had made a report to police, a spokesman confirmed, and officers went to the scene. ....
