The Audubon Society s 2021 Audubon Photography Awards generated a huge number of utterly magnificent pictures of birds.
Almost 9,000 entries were received for the latest edition of the competition, whose judges included Sabine Meyer, photography director for the National Audubon Society. The restrictions on life in a pandemic meant one big change to the normal pattern of entries received: normally, the submitted images are sent in from expeditions across the globe. This time around, the vast majority of pictures were taken almost on the doorstep of each photographer and the quality of the images serves as a reminder that sometimes Nature’ ....

BART is using grazing goats to create firebreaks in its right-of-way property. This will remove dry vegetation and act as an alternative to prescribed burns or herbicides.
For Bill Stewart, a forestry and cooperative extension specialist at UC Berkeley, finding massive herds of goats chomping on dry vegetation in Berkeley has been a regular occurrence for the last 40 years.
According to Stewart, it is not unusual to see 200 grazing goats near the Claremont Canyon Regional Preserve or Tilden Park. In fact, it is likely to become an increasingly common sight as BART uses goats to create firebreaks on its right-of-way property, according to a BART press release. ....

East Bay Regional Park District Closes Locations Due to Extreme Weather

Ridgeline locations of the East Bay Regional Park District will be closed from 8 a.m. Wednesday to 8 a.m. Friday due to extreme weather conditions and likely cleanup needs, officials said.
High winds can cause falling trees and branches, which can cause injury and create safety hazards, the district said in an announcement.
Gusts as of 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday night were as high as 63 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
