3 Steps To Smarter Cybersecurity Hiring And Team Building

“The reality facing organizations today is that there are simply not enough skilled cybersecurity professionals to adequately defend their critical assets,” the study read. “Consequently, more organizations need to shift their mindset when it comes to recruiting for cybersecurity roles.” To that end, the report sets out a 10-point plan for smarter cybersecurity team building, outlining the key factors businesses should consider.
Meanwhile, the Northern Ireland Department for Economy has announced a new project in partnership with cyber skills training provider Immersive Labs providing free access to an enterprise-grade cyber skills development platform for 16- to 25-year-olds who might not otherwise have been able to afford specialist training or education. The aim is to inject necessary skills into previously under-represented groups to prepare them for job opportunities in cybersecurity and help organizations in Northern Ireland hire more effectively.

Wanted: The (Elusive) Cybersecurity 'All-Star'

Security managers trying to hire new staff this year and beyond face some tough realities: Top-level security superstars are hard to find, if they exist at all. Some security budgets are tightening. And there's a startling lack of "soft" communications skills among security professionals.
These are the key trends found in two recent and separate studies of the security workforce by noted security industry groups ISACA and (ISC)². Both studies advise security managers to start by consulting the Workforce Framework for Cybersecurity (NICE Framework), the 800-181 document
published by NIST.
“The Fortune 50 companies may have a good idea on what a cybersecurity department should look like, but there are even large and certainly midsize companies that are still struggling to figure this out,” says Clar Rosso, CEO of (ISC)².

Only 13% of cybersecurity professionals in North America had a cybersecurity education before getting into the sector, according to a new report from (ISC)2, a nonprofit association that certifies cybersecurity professionals. And 8% explored cybersecurity on their own before being recruited to the field.
A majority of cybersecurity pros - 55% - previously worked in IT, according to the study. Another 31% previously worked in the military or law enforcement.
The study found that cloud security is the No. 1 technical skill those entering a cybersecurity career should possess, followed by data analysis skills and coding/programming expertise.

Current and aspiring cybersecurity professionals named cloud security, data analysis and coding/programming as the top three most important skills to possess if you’re looking to join the cyber workforce today.
Those findings came from a new survey-based research report from the International Information System Security Certification Consortium, or (ISC)². For its “Cybersecurity Career Pursuers Study,” the non-profit organization polled 1,024 cybersecurity pros across the U.S. and Canada, along with 1,010 cybersecurity jobseekers looking to land their first position. Twenty-five percent of the former group and 19% of the latter group said cloud security was one of the two most important technical skills or concepts to learn.

The U.K. Cyber Security Council, a self-regulatory body for the cybersecurity education and skills sector that began operations Wednesday, is designed to help "close the skills gap," says Claudia Natanson, chair of the council's board of trustees.
The council will be "an indispensable resource that will influence and be a source of expert advice for all levels of government, industry and academia," she tells Information Security Media Group. "Ultimately, we want to develop and promote U.K. cybersecurity excellence globally.”
The U.K. Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport commissioned the new council in September 2019. It was developed by the Cybersecurity Alliance, an umbrella group of 16 organizations whose members include (ISC)², TechUK, the Chartered Institute of Information Security, the Institute of Electrical Engineers and ISACA.
