YANGON—A large number of people rushed to the Myanmar military-owned Myawaddy Bank in Yangon to withdraw cash on Tuesday morning after anti-coup protesters called for a boycott of military-related businesses.
On Monday, military-owned banks in Yangon opened for only half a day after hundreds of people thronged to withdraw money from their bank accounts as the civil disobedience movement (CDM) gathered strength across the country.
A bank employee at a Yangon branch of Myawaddy Bank on WarTan Street informed customers queuing for services on Tuesday that the bank would service 200 customers a day and that withdrawals were limited to 5 million kyats (about US$3,550) per person. He said customers who were not among the first 200 could return to queue at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.

YANGON—Employees of private banks across Myanmar have joined the growing civil disobedience movement (CDM) against the military regime, which overthrew the democratically elected government on Feb. 1.
With a majority of their employees now taking part in the CDM, and endorsing its “no recognition, no participation” approach, private banks nationwide have since Feb. 8 closed almost all branches due to a shortage of staff, resulting in sluggish banking services and financial transactions.
Participating bankers told The Irrawaddy they were continuing the movement for a second week on Monday.

European Banks Use Pandemic to Clean House

By Patricia Kowsmann and Margot Patrick
European banks are using the pandemic to make changes investors have wanted for years: slash jobs, shut branches and force customers online.
Germany's second-largest lender, Commerzbank AG, said Thursday that it would cut a third of its domestic staff and almost half of its bricks-and-mortar presence after pressure from U.S. shareholder Cerberus Capital Management. Bank mergers under way in Italy and Spain are expected to close thousands of overlapping branches. Business consulting firm Kearney predicts one-quarter of Europe's 165,000 bank branches will be gone in three years.
Banks are one of Europe's economic weak links, and they have been slow to change. Compared with U.S. peers, European banks struggle to make enough money to support lending growth. They came into the Covid-19 crisis still digesting a mountain of bad loans from the sovereign-debt crisis that started more than a decade ago.

Icy roads continue to be a hazard

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Memphis city crews are dealing with ice on trees and not so much on the roadways.
“Kind of crazy,” said Jeremy Carson.
Carson saw a crazy sight when he arrived at work in the Edge district at Marshall and Monroe. Banners over the road that have been there for years were now hanging low, weighed down by ice, he said.
“When we came in I had to drive around it when I came to work. I had to drive all the way around it. Crazy crazy scene to see,” he said.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Work began Tuesday, February 9, on the Charlottesville Downtown Mall for tree pruning and maintenance.
The biennial pruning is to improve the condition of the 77 Willow Oaks lining the historic mall.
The work will include removal of dead wood, providing adequate clearing of structures, structural pruning for weight distribution and balance, as well as removal of split or damaged branches.
Most of the trees are over 45-years-old and were planted when the pedestrian mall was created in 1976.

MP govt aims to nullify RBI restrictions; assures on continuity of DCCBs

Madhya Pradesh government is planning to present the Madhya Pradesh Cooperative Society (Amendment) ordinance 2021 in the upcoming Budget Session which would start from 22 February.
The amendment will bring about major changes in the operation of cooperative banks of the state and in loan recovery from farmers, according to media reports. These provisions will come into effect from 1st April, say sources.
Cooperative experts said that when the amendments are passed in the Assembly, the state government will not have to take permission of the RBI to open branches of cooperative banks. The officials of the cooperative department said the Central Government has amended the Banking Regulation Act, based on which the Cooperative Act is to be amended in the state.
