East Somerville’s Tracey Pratt celebrated at Black Excellence Event Community Content East Somerville resident Tracey Pratt was recently honored at the 2021 Black Excellence on the Hill event, which is hosted annually by the Massachusetts Black & Latino Legislative Caucus (MBLLC) to commemorate Black community leaders and trailblazers who are making a difference in cities and towns across the Commonwealth. Pratt was nominated for this recognition by Rep. Mike Connolly, D-26th Middlesex. This year, the event was held virtually with opening remarks from Rep. Chynah Tyler, D-7th Suffolk; House Speaker Ronald Mariano, D-3rd Norfolk; and Senate President Karen Spilka, D-2nd Middlesex and Norfolk. The keynote address was delivered by Sean Ellis, founder of the Exoneree Network whose life story of being falsely accused of murder was the subject of the acclaimed Netflix Documentary Trial 4. ....
New stations for the Green Line Extension north of Boston won’t just provide platforms for trains – they’ll also be platforms for several new pieces in the MBTA’s public art collection. Contractors are beginning to assemble the new stations on the Green Line Extension (GLX) in preparation for its opening later this year, and during the project’s February Community Working Group meeting, the officials shared images of how the new artworks will fit into the new stations. In a statement, MBTA officials wrote that “this GLX Art Enrichment Program seeks to contribute to the vibrancy of the GLX communities by investing in the success of local artists… The goal is to enhance existing station elements to create a warm and welcoming environment in key areas experienced by the riding public, to both unify and differentiate stations, and to enhance the connection between the station and the community.” ....

An obsolete six-lane expressway that slices through East Somerville will, by the end of this summer, become a four-lane expressway with wide buffered bike lanes. MassDOT plans to repave McGrath Highway later this year, and when the project is over, the roadway’s stripes will be repainted in a new layout (pictured above) that will transform the highway’s outer lanes into new buffered bike lanes to accommodate Somerville’s growing volumes of bike traffic. “This project is an indication of how progressive and courageous MassDOT can be. The road diet is outrageously ambitious for a resurfacing project, and it’s an indication of their willingness to work with us for a safer, calmer McGrath Boulevard,” said Brad Rawson, Director Transportation & Infrastructure for the City of Somerville, in a phone interview on Wednesday morning. ....
