LAKE PLACID Abolitionist John Brown was born on May 9, 1800, and every May for the last 21 years, John Brown Lives! has organized programs and events about progressive social movements of the past. This year will be no different, beginning with a virtual panel discussion this Saturday.
John Brown Day, normally a more formal affair held at this time of year, will be celebrated on July 17 this year, at the John Brown Farm State Historic Site outside Lake Placid. ....

State arts grants set for this year | News, Sports, Jobs - Adirondack Daily Enterprise

BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKE The ADK Quad-County Decentralization Grant Program of the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts this week announced the recipients of the 2021 grant awards, with funds made available by the New York State Council on the Arts.
ALCA’s program is regranting a total of $91,720 for 30 projects throughout the four counties ALCA, as the region’s decentralization grant program site, serves: Clinton, Essex, Franklin and Hamilton.
As in previous years, grants of up to $5,000 were available to eligible organizations and artists based in these four counties. Funding decisions were made by a panel of artists and arts advocates who volunteered their time. For each year’s grant cycle, governmental and quasi-governmental entities, tribal organizations and New York state-designated nonprofits are eligible to be direct applicants, as well as serve as fiscal sponsors. On Easter, April 3, the architect Robert M. Bradbury Jr. Brad to nearly all who knew him died shortly after his wife Monica kissed him goodbye. Brad, 96, was living in Glens Falls Center, a nursing home in Glens Falls, where he spent the last three months of his life.
Born and raised in West Texas, Brad spent the first 10 years living in a tent along the Mexico border outside Laredo, where his dad was an oil field superintendent and his mother a homemaker. In 1934, the family, which now included his sister Dotty, moved to Kilgore, a big new East Texas oilfield boom town. Founded four years after oil was discovered there, Kilgore soon became known as the “City of Stars,” after the lights on top of many oil derricks. By the time Brad graduated from Kilgore High School in 1941, 1,200 derricks had been erected within the city limits. ....

Summer youth musical set to return in Keene | News, Sports, Jobs - Adirondack Daily Enterprise


KEENE VALLEY Auditions for a youth summer theater production are happening next month.
The Book & Blanket Players, sponsored by the East Branch Friends of the Arts, have produced youth theater productions for the past 11 years in Keene Valley. Last summer, rehearsals were moved online, and their production was screened at a drive-in movie theater. This year’s production, a new musical adaption of Jane Austen’s “Pride & Prejudice,” will be staged outside on the Keene Valley Neighborhood House property on the weekend of July 17.
Auditions for the summer 2021 production will be at the Keene Valley Library on May 19 at 3:15 p.m. ....
