More than 39k state employees could be without pay if NY budget not passed by Monday

Created: April 02, 2021 05:55 AM
ALBANY, N.Y. (WHEC)– The clock is ticking for state lawmakers as the state s budget,
If it s not approved by Monday, the delay could impact state employees paychecks. About 39,000 state employees could be affected, and State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli Thursday said many of the employees are essential workers. April 8 is supposed to be the first payday for state employees since the start of the state s fiscal year.
So far, state lawmakers have approved one out of ten budget bills needed to get it done. The delay is likely due to disagreements around the legislature s proposed $7 billion in taxes on wealthy people and corporations. Democrats believe taxing the rich could help close the wealth gap that was worsened by the pandemic.  ....
