Broadband roundtable explores how Evers budget proposal will aid rural areas

Broadband roundtable explores how Evers budget proposal will aid rural areas
Broadband is a big focus of the Evers administration's budget proposal for the 2021-23 biennium, quadrupling the current investment in broadband infrastructure at $200,000. Even with all that money, experts in the field still have to figure out the best ways to invest it.
A roundtable on the challenges rural areas face on lack of access to high-speed internet, or to a connection at all, was held in early April with several members of the agriculture industry in Wisconsin. Randy Romanski, secretary-designee of the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, led the roundtable and explained that DATCP is deeply involved in the effort to get broadband out to those who need it most.

Toronto-based diversity & inclusion data and consulting company Diversio announced the inaugural cohort of over 80 Diversio-certified Canadian companies at a press conference co-hosted by City of Toronto Mayor John Tory this week.
The certification is the first AI-powered certification program that helps participating organizations “set the Canadian Standard for Diversity & Inclusion,” Diversio noted April 27.
“Diversio Certification is a signal that an organization has made a meaningful commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. It is not a check-box exercise. Research shows that a truly inclusive culture requires data, metrics, and impact-oriented programming to enable all employees to succeed. We are pleased that Diversio’s AI-powered certification platform is enabling companies across all sectors and sizes to accelerate their diversity and inclusion journey,” said Laura McGee, CEO of Diversio.

"We knew it was going to be a defining moment in the life of the band": Taking Back Sunday relive the dramatic impact of Louder Now — Kerrang!

“We knew it was going to be a defining moment in the life of the band”: Taking Back Sunday relive the dramatic impact of Louder Now

There’s one precise moment that sums up the surreal impact that Louder Now had on Taking Back Sunday. The band’s third album – their first on a major label – had been released at the end of April 2006, and singer Adam Lazzara was back in Los Angeles, where they’d recorded it the previous winter. His computer was broken, so he ventured to the Apple Store in The Grove, a popular shopping district in the city. The vocalist, who was living in Brooklyn, NY at the time, didn’t see it when he walked into the shop, but there was a giant cutout of an iPhone by the entrance, and his face was on the screen.

Your evening longread: How Beckett's 'fail better' mantra took over Silicon Valley

(Slate, approx 8 mins reading time)
The entrepreneurial class has adopted the phrase with particular enthusiasm, as a battle cry for a startup culture in which failure has come to be fetishized, even valorized. Sir Richard Branson, that affable old sage of private enterprise and bikini-based publicity shoots, has advocated from on high the benefits of Failing Better. He breaks out the quote near the end of an article about the future of his multinational venture capital conglomerate, telling us with characteristic self-assurance that it comes “from the playwright, Samuel Beckett, but it could just as easily come from the mouth of yours truly.”

My three-year-old has taught me the value of talking to strangers

WhatsApp
I’ve no idea how it happened, and I don’t think it had much to do with me personally, but I am the parent of a child who loves people. I’m no misanthrope, yet my nearly three-year-old daughter’s intense attraction towards – and curiosity about – her fellow human beings is a source of ongoing wonder. She has always been a lively and loquacious child, even by toddler standards. It wasn’t until last summer, in that long early stretch of the pandemic, that the extent of her gregariousness first became obvious.
This was peak ice-cream-eating season, and after dinner it became her custom to wander over to the freezer and take out a mini Cornetto, which she would insist on eating in our tiny front garden. “Out front,” she would say, pointing in imperious toddler style towards the door and the world beyond.

Three decades of growth under threat as violence returns to Northern Ireland

Three decades of growth under threat as violence returns to Northern Ireland
Since the Good Friday Agreement Northern Ireland has won a hard-fought prosperity its companies are desperate to maintain
It is almost four decades since Belfast made the DeLorean sports car immortalised in the
Back to the Future movie franchise. But the recent scenes of burning buses and rioters hurling petrol bombs have handed Northern Ireland an uncomfortable taste of its own past.
Unionist anger over post-Brexit trading arrangements combined with outrage over Sinn Fein leaders avoiding prosecution for attending the funeral of senior IRA member Bobby Storey during the pandemic, created scenes on the loyalist Shankill Road reminiscent of the worst days of the Troubles. The turmoil casts a shadow over the economic revival of the province and a surge in foreign investment since 1998’s Good Friday Agreement.
