Temporary housing project to alleviate congestion in hostels has major defects: public protector

The Limpopo department of co-operative governance, human settlements and traditional affairs appointed the HDA as the implementing agent for the project following an assessment of the residential situation at Talana Hostel in Tzaneen, where it was evident the settlement was highly congested and posed a risk of spreading Covid-19.
The HDA appointed the contractor Aventino Group CC (Aventino) through its procurement processes to carry out the construction work.
“Specifications for the construction of the units were set out in the scope of work provided in the amended terms of reference for the appointment of a service provider to construct. A written contract was entered into between the HDA and Aventino,” said the report. ....

I hate to say it, but these days Iâm embarrassed to be seen in public because I ride around in a wheelchair. Iâm afraid that people will judge me harshly.
I swear, itâs as if Abbott and Cawthorn are engaged in some kind of cutthroat competition for the coveted title of Most Screwed Up White Guy in a Wheelchair 2021.

A rehabilitation and research centre is being established by a United States-based Islamic charitable organisation, Helping Hand for Relief and Development (HHRD), in the outskirts of Karachi and it will be the largest rehab facility for the mentally- and physically-disabled people in Pakistan.
This was stated by Dr Mohsin Ansari, an eminent pediatrician practising in Maryland, US, and serving as the chairman of the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) and its overseas charity wing HHRD for last several years, as he addressed a news conference at the Karachi Press Club on Saturday.
The US-based paediatrician is currently on a visit to Pakistan. “We are spending $10 million on the establishment of a state-of-the-art rehabilitation centre and hospital for the treatment of neurological diseases and rehabilitation of physically- and mentally-disabled people and children in Karachi. Although North Korean defectors typically do not provide good policy advice regarding the DPRK, they are a useful reminder of the moral stakes in defusing the Korean confrontation.
Defectors from North Korea deserve respect. Escaping the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is difficult enough. Getting somewhere safe, most often South Korea, is even harder. In recent years the North has dramatically toughened border controls, while Beijing sends defectors back to the DPRK.
However, though defectors are brave, they understandably are focused on their own experiences. Unsurprisingly, those who have suffered the most under hostile dictatorships tend to advocate fighting those governments to the last American. Washington should not rely upon defectors who were fortunate to escape Pyongyang’s not-so-tender mercies for policy advice. ....
