Immigration hawks raise concerns about Stefanik's voting record as she launches GOP leadership bid

Special Report panel discuss Cheney s precarious role as GOP Conference chair
With Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-NY – the favorite to replace Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., as House GOP Conference chair – groups calling for stricter immigration policies are concerned by what they see as a voting record that is not in line with their priorities.
While Cheney was a regular Trump antagonist, her voting record was praised by those calling for lower levels of immigration overall and tougher border security – but they have reportedly been more nervous about Stefanik.
The Center for Immigration Studies’ Mark Krikorian recently told Politico that Stefanik ties with a couple other Republicans for the worst career voting record on immigration in New York. ....

Another Hill to climb: Obscure law denies Dreamers congressional jobs | Cronkite News

WASHINGTON – Gilbert resident Jose Patiño remembers the moment he knew he wanted to work in Congress: It was 2018 and he had just spent months in Washington lobbying to preserve the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
“That’s where I saw how impactful it was to have people there,” Patiño said. “While I was not directly being employed, but just having those conversations, building those relationships.”
But he also knew that it was a dream that, for him, is “just not possible.”
That’s because Patiño, the director of education and external affairs for the immigration advocacy group Aliento, is an undocumented resident of the U.S. As such, he is prohibited under a little-known law – specifically section 704 of Title VII of Division E of the federal budget – from holding a federal job, which includes paid internships and jobs on Capitol Hill. ....

1856: William Hackley recorded in his diary: Rose at 4:30 and walked on the beach, returned home and bathed. At 7:20 a.m. barometer 29.50, thermometer 82, wind northwest 1, clouds 3. The USS Fulton came in yesterday evening from the coast of Honduras and the steamer Jasper got in last night from Miami. Drew up a Bill of Divorce of John P. Smith from his wife and he signed it. Loaned Alexander Patterson $40.00 to enable him to send Fielding to Washington where Senator Stephen Mallory has written for him to come as he can get him some employment of some kind and I think that is the best thing he can do as this is no place for anyone. The steamer Isabel got in by 3 p.m. and off by 4. Mrs. Stephen Mallory and family, Mrs. Kate Tift and family, Charles Tift, Fielding Patterson and Phil Fontane went in her. The steamer Jasper went out about 6 p.m. ....

The annual refugee resettlement kerfuffle is under way.
As usual, on one side are the immigration expansionists: President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, congressional Democrats and predictable GOP defectors, immigration lawyers who see dollar signs in their futures, resettlement agencies who also profit disproportionately, and the tirelessly active pro-immigration lobby.
On the other side are American voters, who want to see an admission cap that’s consistent with the nation’s ability to absorb refugees, the current economy and, in 2021, the possible consequences from a still-threatening COVID-19. Americans also want to maintain the country’s well-deserved image as a compassionate, caring nation. ....

After angering fellow Democrats weeks ago, President Joe Biden is capitulating to the Far Left by quadrupling the cap on refugee submissions to the U.S.
After announcing his intentions to do so in February, President Biden on Tuesday raised the nation s cap to 62,500 after his concern over unemployed Americans angered fellow Democrats who demanded Biden distance himself from Donald Trump.
Ira Mehlman of the Federation for American Immigration Reform points out that President Biden weeks ago said he intended to keep the cap at 15,000 over concerns about unemployment a year into the business-crushing COVID-19 pandemic. ....
