Rescue Plan Will Help Puerto Rico's COVID-19 Recovery, But Stronger Food Assistance Needed in Future

The American Rescue Plan Act includes $1 billion in funding for nutrition assistance for Puerto Rico and other territories that receive block grants for nutrition assistance instead of SNAP (formerly known as food stamps). This funding, along with other temporary nutrition assistance enacted in the last year, will help Puerto Rico meet its residents’ food needs in the coming months as it recovers from the COVID-19 crisis. Over the longer term, policymakers should address the inequity between the nutrition assistance that Puerto Rico receives through a capped block grant and what the territory would receive if it participated in SNAP.

A veteran crime journalist received about $2000 to help blackmail $5m from members of a $100m tax fraud syndicate, a court has heard.
Details of a listening device planted by Australian Federal Police inside a lawyers’ office, which captured an alleged shakedown of the players in the Plutus Payroll scandal, are set to be aired in the NSW Supreme Court as Stephen Barrett stands trial.
Mr Barrett, 63, has denied being a part of a joint criminal enterprise that attempted to extort money from several members of the alleged tax rort cartel in 2017.
She said that on February 1, 2017, Mr Barrett and Daniel Rostankovski met with several members of the Plutus group at the offices of Clamenz Lawyers at the MLC Centre in the Sydney CBD during which demands were made for $5m. ....

KARACHI: The Supreme Court on Friday issued notices to federal law officer and private respondents on Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s claim for restoration of an 8 acre area near Jheel Park at PECHS into amusement park.
Aggrieved with the Sindh High Court’s order that restrained KMC and KDA from demolition drive against owners of 106 residential units near Jheel park, KMC submitted that land meant for recreational purpose could not be sold out for residential purposes. The counsel submitted that Supreme Court had ordered return of all amenity parks to their original position.
The KMC counsel submitted that article 52A of the KDA Order, 1957 specifically prohibits the conversion of amenity plot to residential or commercial purposes and the sub-lease deeds in favour of respondents were executed by a person, who had no right to do so and claiming the right by the respondents on the basis of the said lease deeds is misconceived. ....

Twelve leading aged care consumer organisations, led by the Council on the Ageing (COTA) Australia, have issued a detailed joint response to the Final Report of the Aged Care Royal Commission, identifying the key reforms the Federal Government must implement in the upcoming Federal Budget to ensure its response to the Royal Commission gets off to a flying start.
