How much should NC pay in weekly unemployment benefits? And for how long? House bill proposes a study of which states we should be compared with on setting limits

NC House bill would compare N.C. with other large states for unemployment benefits
For nearly eight years, North Carolina’s unemployment insurance law and benefits have been linked closely to its Southeast neighbors.
As a result, unemployed and furloughed North Carolinians have received among the nation’s most meager benefits in terms of maximum weeks of between 12 and 16, and maximum weekly payments of $350.
By comparison, 44 states provide at least 26 weeks of regular benefits.
Yet, given North Carolina is the ninth largest state by population at 10.5 million — and closing fast on No. 8 Georgia — some leaders say that limiting employment comparisons to the Southeast may not be the most appropriate measuring stick. ....

In a bit of a surprise, the Facebook Oversight Board refused to restoreDonald Trump’s Facebook account. It was suspended after the former president posted comments on Facebook and Instagram encouraging the insurrectionists who looted the Capitol January 6. The comments and videos violated Facebook’s Community Standards, grounds for blocking Trump’s account.
The oversight board agreed that Trump violated those standards when he “praised and supported people involved in a continuing riot where people died, lawmakers were put at serious risk of harm, and a key democratic process [certification of electoral votes] was disrupted.” ....

McInnis Appointed to Subcommittee Formed to Investigate Prep Athletics

As one of several state lawmakers who have looked into operations and assets of the N.C. High School Athletic Association in recent weeks, Sen. Tom McInnis has been appointed to a General Assembly subcommittee created to examine issues concerning oversight and supervision of public high school athletics.
According to a press release, the subcommittee on interscholastic athletics was established this year under the Joint Legislative Commission on Governmental Operations to examine issues concerning the administration and management of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.
“For so many families in my district, high school athletics is the center of their social calendar. Friday night football games bring together the entire community,” said Sen. McInnis, who represents the 25th District that includes Moore County. “The N.C. High School Athletic Association has amassed more than $41 million in assets, an amount unheard of for all other high schoo ....
