LODI GRAPEVINES DURING THE MERRY, MERRY MONTH OF MAY

MONDAY, MAY 10, 2021.  BY RANDY CAPAROSO.
What is happening out in Lodi vineyards today, during the merry, merry month of May? Pretty much the same as in most of California’s vaunted wine regions, since vineyard growth patterns in Lodi mirror all but the most extreme regions of California (more extreme examples being the tiny pockets of ultra-cool climate zones in Santa Barbara, nosebleed ridgetops in Mendocino, or Santa Cruz Mountains, or super-hot regions like Kern County).
But in moderate regions like Lodi, Sonoma County, Napa Valley, Livermore Valley, or most of San Luis Obispo County  all sharing the commonality of a coastal Mediterranean climate shoot growth on grapevines is currently somewhere between 1 to 4-feet in length and pushing out further at a rate of about an inch a day. ....

AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF PREVENTATIVE PRACTICES FOR MANAGING TRUNK DISEASE IN TABLE GRAPE VINEYARDS

AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF PREVENTATIVE PRACTICES FOR MANAGING TRUNK DISEASE IN TABLE GRAPE VINEYARDS
MONDAY, APRIL 19, 2021.  BY KENDRA BAUMGARTNER, PHD, USDA, JOHNATHAN KAPLAN, PHD, CSU SACRAMENTO, & MAX NORTON, PHD, CSU SACRAMENTO.
California is the nation’s leading grower and sole exporter of table grapes [California Department of Food and Agriculture, 2017], with over 99% of US commercial table grapes grown in California [California Table Grape Commission (CTGC), 2017]. In 2016, the state’s 85,166 bearing acres of commercial table grapes produced 939,294 metric tons of grapes, valued at $1.85 billion [CTGC, 2017; CTGC, 2016]. Most of this acreage is located in the southern San Joaquin Valley.
Trunk, or wood-canker diseases, including Botryosphaeria dieback, Esca, Eutypa dieback, and Phomopsis dieback, present a serious challenge to the productivity of vineyards of all types. The majority of California vineyards over age 10 are likely infected [Hillis et al., 201 ....

XERCES MONARCH & POLLINATOR KITS: CALIFORNIA

MONDAY, APRIL 12, 2021. BY XERCES SOCIETY.

Many insect pollinators are declining in California, including bees and butterflies. The Western monarch population has declined 99.9% since the 1980s, likely due to multiple factors including habitat loss and degradation, pesticides, and climate change. One important step we can take to protect these important animals is to increase the amount of habitat available to these species. To this end, The Xerces Society is offering habitat kits that contain climate-smart native plants to project partners who are willing to provide the time, labor, and land to develop habitats that support monarchs and other pollinators in California. ....
