U.S. DOT announces $15.8 million in grant awards to 37 projects nationwide


$30.5 billion in Federal Funding for nation’s transit systems announced today.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration (FTA) today announced that 37 projects will receive a share of $15.8 million in funding to support strategies that develop, deploy and demonstrate solutions that improve the operational efficiency of transit agencies and enhance rider mobility during the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) public health emergency.
“These additional resources will provide transit agencies and the states with the additional resources to strengthen public confidence in transit, which remains among the safest modes of travel during the public health emergency,” said FTA Deputy Administrator K. Jane Williams. “Our support will help leverage new technologies that will improve safety and efficiency throughout our transit systems.” ....

Receiving CARSI grants are: Metrolink operator Southern California Regional Rail Authority ($14,771,250); Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority ($1,000,000); New York State Department of Transportation, Metropolitan Transportation Authority and MTA Metro-North Railroad ($19,728,000); Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority ($3,335,000); and Washington state’s Sound Transit ($1,421,500).
Five commuter rail agencies will receive a total of $40.26 million in grants for highway/rail grade crossing improvements from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), in coordination with the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and Federal Transit Administration (FTA). The awards are part of round one of the Commuter Authority Rail Safety Improvement (CARSI) Grants Program. ....

The FTA will provide just over $766 million for the Portal North Bridge Project, with the Federal Highway Administration providing roughly $57 million. NJ Transit and Amtrak will provide the balance of funding, about $977 million, and share operating and maintenance.
New Jersey Transit has received a $766.5 million grant agreement from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) for the $1.888 billion two-track, fixed-span Portal North Bridge Project in Hudson County.
The committed FTA funds will go toward replacing the 110-year-old Portal Bridge across the Hackensack River in the New Jersey Meadowlands. The Federal Highway Administration is providing some $57 million for the project. NJ Transit and Amtrak will provide the balance of funding, about $977 million, and share operating and maintenance. ....

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration (FTA) today announced a total of $14 billion in Federal funding allocations to continue to support the Nation’s public transportation systems during the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) public health emergency. Funding is provided through the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021 (CRRSAA) (H.R. 133), signed by President Donald J. Trump on December 27, 2020. FTA previously announced $25 billion in Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act funding in April 2020.
“This additional $14 billion in transit infrastructure grants will help ensure our nation’s public transportation systems can continue to serve the millions of Americans who depend on them,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao. ....
