It’s Wednesday, April 14. I’m Carol Cormaci, bringing you the latest roundup of Orange County news and events.
During the middle of the day last Sunday, while most Orange County residents were going about their usual routines, Pier Plaza in Huntington Beach was teeming for a few hours with people drawn in, some by curiosity but mostly in solidarity with people of color after word spread that a “White Lives Matter” rally was planned.
A team of my colleagues — Hayley Smith, Ruben Vives, Priscella Vega, Hannah Fry and Matt Szabo — covered the event, which turned out to be largely a grassroots counter protest to the white supremacist’s’ planned rally. Not only did media keep an eye on the action, police helicopters and drones hovered above throughout. It was the kind of scene, with the potential for chaos, that Huntington Beach has witnessed all too many times over the years.

Catalina Island is known for many things - its amazing beaches, the unparalleled snorkeling and of course, the bison who call it their home. But after health orders brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, people also lost out on learning about the island's rich and storied history.
Catalina Island Museum Executive Director Julie Perline-Lee says thankfully tourists are returning because COVID had been incredibly destructive to them.
"It was real touch-and-go there. Most of our community had lost their jobs because we are a tourist-based industry," Perline-Lee said. "We had all our eggs in one basket."

Laguna Art Museum brings on Julie Perlin Lee as new executive director
Julie Perlin Lee has been hired as the new executive director of the Laguna Art Museum.

The Laguna Art Museum has chosen Julie Perlin Lee as its next executive director.
A national search to fill the position was conducted by the museum following the retirement of Malcolm Warner, who served in the role from January 2012 through December of last year.
“I got excited because I could see that there was a board unified in their vision to increase the recognition and visibility of the museum,” Lee said of joining the Laguna Art Museum. “Having that sort of energy in a board was exciting for me.”

Laguna Art Museum has tapped Julie Perlin Lee, outgoing executive director of Catalina Island Museum, to lead the storied organization amid a pandemic that has devastated art institutions across the country.
Lee succeeds Malcolm Warner who retired in December after a nine-year run with Laguna Art Museum. She’s set to start her new role on May 3.
“With Julie we have a person with strong experience managing exhibitions and collections, and yet someone with experience in senior level museum administration,” said Joe Hanauer, chair of Laguna Art Museum’s Board of Trustees. “It’s typically one or the other, but usually not both.”
