Developmental disability advocates, school representatives, health care leaders, and residents took to a public microphone Tuesday to argue for specific priorities in the New Hampshire budget, in a marathon hearing that highlighted broad concerns with the state’s funding models.

During a nine-hour virtual listening session that ended around 10:30 p.m., advocates pressed the Senate Finance Committee for additional funding for mental health services, schools, child care programs, and dental care, and argued against efforts to cut those areas. Speakers also asked senators to remove a House restriction on family care funding and a ban on teaching “divisive topics.” ....

The New Hampshire House is considering recommending a constitutional amendment that would prevent future state laws from restricting firearm ownership, one of a series of gun rights bills proposed this year.
The proposal, officially called Constitutional Amendment Concurrent Resolution 8 would prevent the Legislature from passing any law “restricting the right to own, carry, or use firearms or firearm accessories.”
But some gun rights groups say that the amendment needs to be workshopped, and could have unintended consequences for firearms use in the state. ....

Act I: Republican state Rep. Jim Spillane posts on Facebook that it’s open season on any house with a Black Lives Matter sign posted on its lawn. If you see one, his post reads, you’re “free to loot and burn that house.” Another state representative, Republican Dawn Johnson, posts an article on her own social media from a known neo-Nazi site that includes a Jewish caricature and a racial slur. Spillane later posts another image of Jewish men as they are commonly depicted in anti-Semitic tropes, seated around a Monopoly board that rests on the backs of dark-skinned, oppressed workers. Spillane’s own caption reads, “Truth. Agree.” ....

The New Hampshire Legislature, led by the Republican majority, is failing in its constitutional duty to conduct its business and represent all the people in the state, and it’s doing so in a way that has particularly dangerous consequences.
Back in May, as the COVID crisis was unfolding, the Kent Street Coalition took to these pages to urge Democratic majority leaders to do whatever was necessary so that the Legislature could resume meeting in a way that was accessible and safe for all. We also called for transparency so that the public could understand what obstacles stood in the way and what was being done to address them. ....
