The Fairfield Community High School Board of Education will hold a special meeting tonight at 5 in the school study hall. The board is scheduled to approve the updated Return to School plan in light of new mandates from the state regarding coronavirus precautions. It is also set to approve the teacher/student handbook and to accept the resignation of bus driver Peggy Garrison. August-Special-Board-meeting The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for much of the listening area until 8 tomorrow night. Hot temperatures and high humidity could cause heat illnesses, though scattered thunderstorms may provide relief from the heat if they occur. The Edwards County Council on Aging says its Albion location will not have meal service today due to a lack of electricity at the Albion office. West Salem, Grayville, and Wayne County locations will continue to serve food today. Several people were sentenced in Wayne County Circuit Court yesterday. 43-year-old Albion resident Jamie D. O'Neal pleaded guilty to a Class 3 felony count of possession of methamphetamine. She was sentenced to two years probation, plus time served. 28-year-old Fairfield resident Jacob D. Ferranti pleaded guilty to a Class A misdemeanor count of battery. He was sentenced to one year supervision. Both were ordered to pay fines and court costs. Several people were booked in the Wayne County Jail yesterday. 23-year-old Fairfield resident Jacob A. Chrtt was arrested on charges of domestic battery and criminal damage to government supported property. He was held, pending an appearance before a judge to set bond. 28-year-old Wayne City resident Kaine M. Nino was arrested on a Wayne County warrant for domestic battery. He was held, pending the posting of $770 bond. The Edwards County Farm Bureau recently donated $10,000, split evenly among four community groups. The Albion Grade School PTO, West Salem Grade School PTO, and Wells Elementary School PTO each received $2,500 to spend however they choose for their schools. The Albion Park Board received $2,500 to use for pool improvements. The Legislative Committee of the Fairfield City Council will meet tonight at 6 at Fairfield City Hall. Committee members are scheduled to discuss the liquor ordinance and Sunday liquor sales, as well as parlor licenses. Their final item of business will deal with the fee structure for license holders and the number of licenses allowed. Fairfield Memorial Hospital has provided an update on its expansion progress. Last week, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical contractors worked on the in-wall and ceiling installation portions of their work, and drywall contractors worked on mudding, finishing the second floor, and starting the first floor. This week, window frames on the staircase are expected to be installed, and the installment of metal panels on the south elevation should begin. Grade work on the west elevation could be completed, weather permitting, and crews will begin building the retaining wall. The Fairfield City Council met last night and condemned the section of Westport Plaza next to Dollar General due to a caved in roof and ceiling. The remaining portions of the structure were not condemned. In other action, the council approved the purchase of two used police cars and the auction by sealed bid of two unusable ones. In his report at last night's meeting, Fairfield Mayor Mike Dreith said he is exploring grant opportunities to build a limited number of camper slots on city property at Southwest Park. He also indicated Claire Vaughan will debut the new city website at the August 24th council meeting, and the site will merge the City and Chamber of Commerce home pages. The Cisne Village Board met this week and heard from the North Wayne Ambulance Service. The service said, if serious funds aren't available soon, it will not be able to stay open, leaving Flora and Fairfield services to cover the area. The board agreed to help, but it will vote on how to go about it at its next meeting, where more members can attend. One possible suggestion mentioned was adding a $1-2 fee to each utility bill to keep the service in Cisne. The Hamilton County Health Department announced five new cases of COVID-19 yesterday, bringing its total to 939; two people were hospitalized, and 27 were in isolation. White County added 16 cases and sat at 2,047, and Jefferson County added 28 cases and announced the death of an unvaccinated female in her 50s. The state Department of Public Health announced 2,950 new cases of COVID-19 yesterday and 10 additional deaths. Statewide totals sat at 1,447,161 cases and 23,542 deaths. The Southern Region had a seven-day positivity rate of 9.6 percent on the 7th, up from 9.5 percent on the 6th. Crop conditions continue to improve in Illinois, according to the latest statewide weekly crop report. It was a bit cooler and drier in the past week, and corn crop conditions improved to 79 percent in good-to-excellent condition, with 66 percent of the crop in the dough stage and three percent in the dent stage. Soybeans improved to 78 percent in good-to-excellent condition, with 71 percent of the crop setting pods. Average statewide topsoil moisture declined to eight percent very short, 17 percent short, 70 percent adequate, and five percent surplus. This is Kids Eat Right Month, and OSF Healthcare is among the groups encouraging parents to get involved in helping improve their children's diets. OSF Dietician Sara Umphleet says parents can help kids eat healthy by modeling good food behavior, and more information can be found at KidsEatRight.org. The Odin School Board met Monday night and rejected a high school basketball co-op possibility with Patoka after a three-to-three vote. Some members felt, if they didn't have enough students to play this year, they may not have them in the future, either. Others said they couldn't predict numbers, but they didn't think the community would accept seeing Odin students in Patoka uniforms. River stages as of this morning: the Little Wabash east of Fairfield stands at 22.70 feet, above the 17 ft. flood stage. Meanwhile, the Skillet Fork at Wayne City has a reading of 8.55 feet (flood stage is 15 ft.). The Little Wabash below Clay City is at 21.09 feet (flood stage is 18 ft.). Bonpas Creek at Browns reads 13.44 feet, and the Little Wabash at Main Street in Carmi reads 17.16 feet. The Wabash River at Mt. Carmel sits at 8.00 feet. Today's crude oil price is $61.25, up $1.75 from yesterday. The September crude oil price is $68.38, up $1.12 from yesterday morning.
