Intel Corp. is said to be in talks about acquiring the chipmaker GlobalFoundries Inc. in a deal that could be worth as much as $30 billion, which would make it Intel’s largest-ever acquisition.
The news was first reported by the Wall Street Journal, which cites people familiar with the matter as saying the talks involve GlobalFoundries’ owner Mubadala Investment Co., an investment arm of the Abu Dhabi government that’s based in the U.S.
GlobalFoundries earlier this year filed for an initial public offering and could still go ahead with that, as no deal is guaranteed, the Journal said. ....

China's Chip-Independence Goals Helped by U.S.-Developed Tech

Jan. 11, 2021 9:31 am ET
A U.S.-born approach to defining how computer processors work presents a potential steppingstone to chip independence for Chinese tech companies that face growing limits from Washington on buying American semiconductors.
The so-called RISC-V technology offers an openly accessible approach to running the brains that power personal computers, smartphones and servers. It is an emerging rival to two, long-dominant proprietary models from Intel Corp. and Arm Holdings Ltd., a British company that U.S. graphics-chip maker Nvidia Inc. agreed in September to acquire for $40 billion.
The standard is winning global interest, and early users include Chinese online retail and tech giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. , which developed what some industry insiders consider the highest-performance RISC-V chip in production. Alibaba has said it is using that chip in its data centers to perform artificial intelligence calculations, and is selling versi ....

Report: SoftBank to create its first special-purpose acquisition company

SHARE
SoftBank Group Corp. is preparing to raise between $500 million and $600 million via an initial public offering of its first special-purpose acquisition company, Axios reported late Sunday, citing multiple sources.
The investment giant, which is known for backing promising technology startups, is said to be prepping for at least two additional SPACs, which are entities created for the sole purpose of merging with another firm and then taking that firm public. SPACs are becoming increasingly popular among tech firms as a lower-cost alternative to the traditional IPO process.
Axios cited senior SoftBank executive Rajeev Misra as saying that Citigroup and Goldman Sachs are lead-managing the process, and said the SPAC is intended to buy a company SoftBank has not previously invested in. It’s not clear what company SoftBank is targeting. ....
