Federal investigators say Oregon company violated multiple laws related to 2019 crash that killed three Christmas tree workers

A federal investigation into a 2019 van crash that killed three migrant farm workers in Salem found that the Oregon labor contractor who hired the workers violated multiple federal laws by failing to ensure the workers had safe transportation to and from work.
The U.S. Department of Labor announced Monday that Salem-based JMG Labor Contractor, run by Jose Mota Gonzales, permitted the transportation of workers without required authorization, failed to provide safe transportation, failed to ensure the vehicle’s driver had a valid driver’s license and proper insurance and didn’t register the driver as an employee. The department also said Mota failed to maintain active registration as a farm labor contractor. ....

Private daycare and preschool programs in Oregon that receive public funds would no longer be allowed to suspend or expel students starting in 2026, under a proposal headed for a vote in the state Senate.
Nationally, toddlers and preschool students of color face disproportionately high rates of suspension and expulsion from early childhood programs, and advocates want Oregon to stop allowing those practices. For young children, being expelled from care can be traumatizing and negatively shape that child’s view of their self for years to come, supporters said. ....
