Ohio Republicans after Donald Trump: Where do they go from here?


COLUMBUS – After four-and-a-half years of red Make America Great Again caps, raucous rallies and news-making tweets, the Republican party no longer belongs to former President Donald Trump.
As Trump moves out of the White House, Ohio Republicans are left to decide whether their embrace of Trump will persist in a state he dominated twice. What policies will they cling to and which rhetoric will they ditch? 
Those decisions will reverberate throughout the Buckeye State in the coming years. Both Gov. Mike DeWine and Sen. Rob Portman face re-election bids in 2022, and Trump already hinted at a primary challenge for the GOP governor.   ....

Liz Walters, Summit County Council president, was elected Ohio Democratic Party chairwoman, and Jane Timken was re-elected state Republican chairwoman.
Timken was first elected in January 2017 after the Republican central committee deadlocked on two votes between her and incumbent Chairman Matt Borges. Timken, who was backed by President Donald Trump, emerged as the winner after negotiations behind closed doors.
It was a lot easier Friday with Timken being the only candidate and winning another four-year term.
“I’m honored and humbled for your continued support,” Timken told the Republican central committee. “We’ve accomplished so much together and we have so much more to accomplish.” ....

LISBON Jim Hoppel, Columbiana County’s longest-serving county commissioner, chaired his last meeting Thursday.
Hoppel, 82, decided not to seek re-election this year and will leave office on Jan. 2 after a record 24 years six consecutive terms. He was honored following the meeting in front of a crowd that included friends, fellow officeholders and his eldest son, Jim, who lives near Cleveland. His other children Wendy, Steve, Kara and their children watched via Zoom. ....
