After a gruelling, six-week trial, Bradley Barton strode out the prisoner door in Edmonton courtroom B201 last Friday, flanked by sheriff’s officers. A jury moments before had convicted him of manslaughter in the death of Cindy Gladue, a 36-year-old Indigenous woman who bled to death in Barton’s hotel room after he sexually assaulted her in 2011.

For friends of Gladue, the verdict is bittersweet.

“She was silenced, and so she didn’t have the opportunity to tell her side of the story,” said Lisa Weber.
“It’s been a long journey to get here. We’re happy that Cindy finally got her justice,” Brandy Poorman said outside court.
“He’s going to jail. He’s being accountable, and that’s what needs to happen. He needs to be held to account, and now he finally has. He can’t run from it,” said Kari Thomason. ....
