Senate hearing showcases deep partisan divide over LGBTQ legislation

WASHINGTON â An extraordinarily large number of members of Congress wanted to testify at the first Senate hearing for a civil rights bill that would give LGBTQ people explicit legal protections from discrimination, and their messages set out the personal nature of the partisan split that will mean a tough path to becoming law.
Wisconsin Democrat Sen. Tammy Baldwin, the first openly lesbian member of Congress, told the Senate Judiciary Committee that discrimination remains a daily reality for that community in employment, housing, public accommodations and education.
Baldwin said passing the bill, known as the Equality Act, would expand a decades-old anti-discrimination law to cover more people in the majority of states where there arenât protections, not diminish the rights of others. ....

Alaska attorney general discusses plans, Clarkson in hearing

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) â Attorney General Treg Taylor said Monday he takes seriously his duty to decide which cases to pursue in the public interest and is hopeful that under his leadership the state won t see a âstring of losing cases.
His comments were in response to questions during a confirmation hearing before the House Judiciary Committee. Rep. Matt Claman, the chair and an attorney, said he was âtroubledâ by a number of cases that seem like political positions but legally, they re very, very poor positions to take.â
Some of the cases Claman cited were still moving through the legal system, including a school funding dispute set for arguments before the Alaska Supreme Court. In another case, a judge found Gov. Mike Dunleavy unconstitutionally used his veto powers to punish the courts after a Supreme Court decision that invalidated proposed abortion restrictions. ....

Members of the legislature s Higher Education and Employment Advancement Committee heard testimony on Tuesday from Connecticut students, advocates and legislators on a bill that would require college campuses to conduct anonymous sexual misconduct surveys every two years.
The proposed legislation, H.B. 6374, would enable colleges to collect information about sexual violence incidents on campus. It also would establish a council, with appointed members ranging from students to higher education officials, that will be required to submit a report about the surveys to the General Assembly every two years. ....
