HORNELL “It’s time,” said Hornell Public Works Superintendent Mitch Cornish. For the last 15 years or so, DPW has been making small fixes to make the Canisteo Street bridge “passable,” extending the bridge’s lifespan. The small repairs were no longer sufficient last year, when the bridge was red-flagged by the Department of Transportation. The girders that hold up the bridge were deemed unsafe enough to support daily traffic, and the bridge was closed in June. The bridge remains closed today, but a plan is in place to get motorists and pedestrians traveling over Crosby Creek once again later this year. ....
DEC says major phase of the project two-thirds completed The Evening Tribune HORNELL Workers are “burning the midnight oil” on a $4.2 million project to remediate the former Manufactured Gas Plant site in Hornell. The New York State Department of Environment Conservation, which is providing oversight for the National Fuel Gas-financed cleanup, said a major project phase is on track to be completed by around mid-March. The 1.82 acres of land is located along Franklin Street, near the corner with Canisteo Street, southwest of downtown Hornell. The property is listed as a Class 2 cleanup site in the State Registry of Inactive Hazardous Waste locations, meaning it poses a “significant threat to public health,” according to the DEC. ....
