Batley and Spen by-election result: Keir Starmer praises 'fantastic result' for Labour's 'brilliant and brave' Kim Leadbeater


Labour HQ will have spent the last few hours toasting their success in
Batley and Spen, after a nail-biting finish saw
Kim Leadbeater crowned the newest MP. But with a majority of just 323, the reality is a little more mixed. 
Sir Keir Starmer has undeniably bought himself more time at the helm, but unions, donors and a certain faction of MPs want to see proof that he is turning the ship around. I'm told he has a year to do it - but the pressure begins now. 
Meanwhile Tories will be asking themselves what went wrong, after their expectations of a (relatively) easy win came to nothing. Some have already given their verdict:

HEALTH MINISTER STEPHEN Donnelly has said he will propose to amend the Government’s emergency laws for Covid-19 restrictions to ensure that there are no “rolling powers” for extensions. 
His comments come as a number of Opposition parties have raised concerns about the extension of the emergency powers until November.

Laurence Fox loses £10,000 deposit in London Mayor bid


Laurence Fox has lost his £10,000 deposit for his bid to be London Mayor after getting 1.8 per cent of the vote.
The actor, 42, who set up the Reclaim Party for his election race, won 47,634 votes placing him in sixth, behind YouTuber Niko Omilana whose policies included 'Boris Johnson will be forced to shush' and 'the price of Fredos will go back to 5p'.
Candidates need five per cent of first-preference votes to get back their deposits, which only three candidates surpassed: Sadiq Khan, Shaun Bailey and the Green's Sian Berry.

The 42-year-old actor, whose Reclaim Party campaigned on an anti-lockdown platform, lost his £10,000 deposit after winning just 1.8 per cent of the vote, compared with Sadiq Khan's 55 per cent.

Sadiq Khan was today relishing his election victory as he retweeted congratulations from from left-wing mayors across the world.
Out for a walk with dog Luna this afternoon, the newly re-elected London Mayor was taking his more than 200,000-vote majority in his stride.
Mr Khan polled 1,206,034 votes to Conservative challenger Shaun Bailey's 977, 601, after failing to win in first preference votes alone.
But despite seeing his majority cut from 2016's result there was an outpouring  of congratulatory messages with several coming from left-wing mayors around the globe which Mr Khan was happy to retweet.
