The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, which won him global acclaim, with Our Man in Havana author Graham Greene calling it "the best spy story I ever read". Having worked during the 1950s and 1960s for British security service MI5, as well as secret intelligence service MI6, le Carre (born David Cornwell) was perfectly positioned to turn his hand to espionage novels. His books were later adapted for film and TV, with characters such as George Smiley becoming popular . John le Carre shown on dark rainy street in Hamburg in 1964. Thereâs no redecorating Boris Johnsonâs record in office Readers respond to the prime ministerâs extravagant flat refurbishment and the ongoing question of how it was funded âI donât really care very much about who paid for Boris Johnsonâs flat and who said what to who. I care a lot more about the tens of thousands of people who have died because of this manâs ignorance, arrogance and greed,â says one reader. Richard Charkin: On the Long Walk to Audiobooks Logging more than 12 miles per day on London’s walkways, Richard Charkin’s pavement-pounding peripatetics have him exploring ‘the importance of audio and audiobooks.’ On London’s Oxford Street, February 25. Actually, it’s even more acute during the pandemic. It’s called walking. I walk roughly 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) every day. Richard Charkin I walk for health, physical and mental. But 20 kilometers a day, which takes approximately four hours, can be boring, particularly when one is obliged not to venture too far from home because of lockdown restrictions. To counter the
He’s been called the John le Carre of our generation and now spy thriller writer Mick Herron is having books from his Slough House series turned into a TV drama starring Oscar winner Gary Oldman. Titled Slow Horses, it will air on Apple TV, starring Oldman as Jackson Lamb, an overweight, flatulent, boozing, politically incorrect but brilliant intelligence officer who ends up in MI5’s dumping ground because of his career-wrecking mistakes. The show will also star Kristin Scott Thomas and Jonathan Pryce. Mr Oldman won an Oscar nomination for his role as master spy George Smiley in the 2011 movie Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, an adaptation of John le Carre’s novel.

âYou could be the perfect spy. All you need is a cause,â the Canadian Security Intelligence Service included in the ad. Photograph: Eva Hambach/AFP/Getty Images For an intelligence agency seeking new recruits, the promises of adventure and intrigue found within the pages of famous spy novels might seem like a useful recruiting tool. But promoting a double agent who lies to his family, betrays his country and ultimately takes his own life, is possibly not a strategy that will produce the best candidates. Canadaâs spy agency did just that when it posted a seemingly innocent tweet drawing attention to new job postings.
