Alarming spike in marine stings across Sarina season

Sarina Surf Life Saving Club recorded an alarming increase in marine stings in the past season, prompting a warning for swimmers to not be complacent.
The club recorded 152 stings in the 2020-21 patrol season, compared to just 10 the previous season.
In contrast, Mackay cut its marine stings count from 41 in 2019-20 to 19 this season.

The revival of surfing, which took place at the beginning of the 20th century, coincided with the revival of swimming.
Although swimming can be traced back to antiquity and numbers Caesar and Charlemagne among its more famous exponents, the sport had fallen into disrepute during the Middle Ages, as it was thought to be the cause of smallpox epidemics.
When taken up again in the last century, swimming out of doors had transgressed Victorian ideas of morality, and there were many complaints about mixed bathing and the flagrant exposure of naked flesh on the beaches (such as fingers, toes, and necks!) ....

With the waters getting cooler the central Queensland, surf lifesaving season has come to a finish.
The Labour Day long weekend was the last opportunity Mackay locals had to make splash under the watchful eyes of lifesavers until the patrolled beaches return in spring.
Eimeo Surf Lifesaving Club president Ross Gee was pleased with how the 2020-21 season went.
Mr Gee said there had been fewer stingers than usual, with only three minor stings recorded and thankfully the club did not have to perform any rescues.
âWeâre really on top of our preventive actions,â he said. ....

On May 1, it s time to celebrate International Bodysurfing Day (IBSD).
After all, the art of riding waves without a buoyant watercraft dates as far back as 2,000 B.C. and predates board riding.
The initiative was soft-launched in 2020 by John P. Murphy, an American writer and teacher who lives in Puerto Escondido, Mexico.
Murphy had already started Los Cabrones, an open bodysurf club that promotes the sport via weekly get-togethers and free water safety clinics.
One day, he decided to create a local competition with a sustainable model of beach community growth that could expand the tourist season and fill in the calendar year. ....
