Nuno P. Monteiro, associate professor of political science, died on May 5.
Monteiro was an expert in international relations theory and security studies. He was known among his colleagues and students for his intellectual rigor, compassionate nature, and friendly spirit. 
“Nuno was a gifted and devoted teacher and mentor to undergraduate and graduate students alike,” said Gregory Huber, chair of the Department of Political Science. “Additionally, he was a serious and forceful academic who took deep pride in the art and craft of research, reading, and engaging widely. His work and insights deepened our knowledge of complex problems within international relations, including nuclear proliferation, in the complex post-Cold War world. We will all miss his insights, rigor, and deep sense of humor.” ....

Two Princetonians awarded Gaither Fellowship to work at Carnegie Endowment

Princeton University senior Nikhita Salgame has been awarded a Gaither Junior Fellowship, which gives graduating seniors an opportunity to work as research assistants to scholars at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Benjamin Press, a 2020 graduate, received the award in 2020.
They were among a select group of students from around the country chosen for the James C. Gaither Junior Fellows program, each specializing in a different topic or region. Salgame will join the Carnegie Endowment’s Democracy, Conflict and Governance program, where Press worked this past year. ....

Quantum ethics project awarded DFAT grant
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has awarded the Centre for International Security Studies (CISS) $800,000 over two years to develop accords for the ethical use of quantum technologies.
Announced by the Honourable Marise Payne, Minister for Foreign Affairs, the grant is part of the Australia-India Cyber and Critical Technology Partnership which promotes a free, open and rules-based Indo-Pacific region.
“This is the moment to address the social, ethical and geopolitical implications of a quantum future,” said CISS Director Professor James Der Derian.
The Quantum Meta-Ethics project will be led by Professor Der Derian, in partnership with a team under the direction of Dr Rajeswari Rajagopalan at the Delhi-based Observer Research Foundation (ORF).
