1. Background
The International Legal Assistance Consortium (ILAC) is a rule of law organisation comprising professional legal associations, NGOs and individual legal experts from more than thirty countries. Gathering its members’ legal expertise and competencies from various contexts and legal traditions, ILAC works to strengthen the rule of law, empower legal professionals and ensure equal access to justice for all where people’s justice needs are the greatest – in conflict, crisis or transitions to democracy – through justice needs assessments, programme coordination and international policy dialogue.

Mr Kirby added:
‘It is tragic but true that the near fatal poisoning of Mr Navalny with nerve agents had all the hallmarks of the actions of the Russian security apparatus dating back to Soviet days. By returning home to Russia, at obvious personal risk, Mr Navalny has valiantly advanced the day when the Russian Federation will ultimately fulfil its right to become a modern, functioning democratic state, with a law-abiding government and a vigilant opposition that both observe universal human rights and the rule of law.’
Mr Navalny was arrested on arrival at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport, on Sunday 17 January 2021, after disembarking from a flight from Germany. It was the first time he had returned to Russia since a suspected poisoning by Russian security forces in August 2020. ....

China: IBA salutes advocates standing up for the rule of law | International Bar Association

The
International Bar Association (IBA) joins the international community in solidarity with those against whom China’s government has levied asset and visa sanctions. Widely regarded as retaliatory measures by the Chinese authorities, individuals, institutions and organisations, that have been critical of the alleged ill-treatment of Uighur Muslims in the Northern province of Xianjiang in China, have been targeted by China’s government. The imposed restrictions prevent travel to China, freeze assets and ban Chinese citizens and institutions from doing business with anyone on the list.
IBA President Sternford Moyo commented:
‘When the rule of law and human rights are under threat in any part of the world each one of us has the duty to speak out. Sanctions have been imposed by China on those who have done just that.
