Charter School In Santa Clarita Brings “Imagineering” To The Classroom
SCVi Charter School in Santa Clarita presented their learners/students with a unique project by giving them the opportunity to create their own addition to Disneyland.
SCVi provides project based learning to their learners and have seen tremendous success with the new and innovative method of teaching.
SCVi Lower School Director Nessa Roffredo discussed what project learning is on SCVi’s Eye on the Valley radio show, “Project Based Learning can be understood more as an experience more than the linear series of lessons.”
We have our learners learn about the subject and create a project with something to show at the end based on the overall lesson, Roffredo said. ....

L.A. County Hits Threshold To Re-Open TK-6 In-Person Learning
Officials with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH) confirmed Tuesday that the county had hit the threshold necessary to re-open in-person instruction for elementary school students in grades TK-6.
Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis confirmed that Tuesday marked the fifth consecutive day in which the number of new daily COVID-19 case rate stood at 25 per 100,000, allowing students in grades TK-6 to re-open for in-person learning.
“I’m encouraged with the recent progress that the residents of Los Angeles County has made in combating the pandemic,” Solis said. “Our cases and hospitalizations continue to significantly drop since the winter surge.” ....

Mike Garcia Calls On President Biden To Reopen Schools Statewide

The lawmakers go on to point out in the letter that there are currently nearly ten million fewer jobs in the U.S. than before the pandemic, and that case numbers and hospitalizations continue to drop countrywide.
“By allowing our nation’s schools to remain shuttered, you are depriving these children of the people and support systems they depend on,” the lawmakers wrote. “In addition to the impact of the youth mental health crisis, school closures are increasing education inequality in the United States.”
Santa Clarita has made its first steps in an attempt to reopen schools, beginning with the Castaic Union School District (CUSD), which voted to reopen their in-person classes after both state and county health orders allowed it Thursday. ....

Barger Asks Newsom To Allow 'Immediate Opening' Of All K-6 Classrooms

California had previously created a waiver program for schools to apply to reopen, during which L.A. County allowed the reopening of schools for grades TK-2. The deadline to apply for such waivers ended on Jan. 14, with the caveat that only those schools that had reopened with approved waivers could remain open.
Now, under the current guidelines, any school that had not applied for a waiver, or who had received a waiver but not reopened prior to Jan. 14, would have to wait to reopen in-person instruction for any grade until the case rate in Los Angeles County falls below 25 cases per 100,000 people per day for five consecutive days. ....
