TIGHTROPE: ECHO!?, 2021. Reclaimed electrical components on panel with two megaphones, 45 1/4 x 47 1/4 x 16 in. 114.9 x 120 x 40.6 cm.
NEW YORK, NY
.-James Cohan is presenting TIGHTROPE: ECHO!?, an exhibition of new work by Elias Sime, on view at 48 Walker Street from March 19 through April 24. This is Sime’s fourth solo exhibition at James Cohan. TIGHTROPE: ECHO!? is accompanied by an essay written by curator and anthropologist Meskerem Assegued, with whom Sime co-founded the Zoma Museum.
Elias Sime deftly weaves, layers and assembles materials into abstract compositions that suggest topography, figuration, and sublime color fields. The history of his materials hold meaning, as they are the backbone of all communication systems, whether they be telephone or computer. They suggest the tenuousness of our interconnected world, alluding to the frictions between tradition and progress, human contact and socia ....

NEW YORK, NY
.-David Richard Gallery is presenting a selection of smaller scaled studies created by Robert Swain to confirm the colors and their corresponding interactions prior to producing the much larger paintings. These are detailed studies for paintings from several different iconic series created by the artist from 1987 through 2020. They are prepared the same way as the larger paintings, with the same care and precision on the same supports (except for some earlier studies on Masonite panels) and the same paint as the larger counterparts. ....

Art Historian Darby English on Why the New Black Renaissance Might Actually Represent a Step Backwards

Recently, English shared with me his reflections on our current moment, how art has changed over the past several decades, and why generalizations of Black art are so problematic.
You are very keen on the problems of generalization within the art world with regards to how African American art is taught, critiqued, and discussed. What is your biggest problem with these generalizations? How, in your opinion, can historians work to remove and/or reduce their use of generalizing?
My issue with generalization is that it feels an irresponsible way to respond to art’s diversity and specificity. If you understand art as something different from yourself, as the work of another consciousness, then it is very hard to generalize about it. Art reflects the immense variation in the field of experience, offers us opportunities to explore and come to terms with that plenitude. Accounts of art that suppress variation, that are nonchalant about those precious opportunities, need to be re ....

10 Famous Filming Locations from Steve Martin's 'L.A. Story'

Harris: And when the weather dropped down to 58 degrees
this weekend, how did you cope?
Man: I just made sure all the windows were shut.
Harris: And what about your pets? Were they outside? What happened?
Man: Well, the cats were out till around ten. When it got a little too cold for ‘em, they came in.
Harris (to camera): The cats were out until around ten, but it got a little
too cold them and they came in. Well, that’s how L.A. coped with that surprise low of 58 degrees
that turned the weekend into a real weenie shrinker. ....

Parrasch Heijnen opens an exhibition of new works by Xylor Jane

Parrasch Heijnen opens an exhibition of new works by Xylor Jane
Installation view.
LOS ANGELES, CA
.-Parrasch Heijnen is presenting Back Rub / Foot Rub, an exhibition of new works by American artist Xylor Jane (b.1963, Long Beach, CA). This is the gallery’s second solo exhibition with the artist.
Jane’s exploration of unique phenomena found in numbers and patterns produces delicately layered tessellations that achieve mesmerizingly intricate precision. The artist’s paintings on panel reflect a controlled form of chaos utilizing ideas similar to that of pointillism—weight is added in the density of marks, culminating in a complexly resolved image. The labyrinthine forms are highly evolved constructions utilizing numerical systems sectioned within each panel. Jane either methodically plans out each panel beforehand or begins with problematic compositions that resolve through her experimental process. ....
