She started at the bottom, now she's changing the way we go to the toilet

She started at the bottom, now she’s changing the way we go to the toilet
From the Kiwee Lifter to BDèt to Toru Roll, Billie Jo Hohepa-Ropiha has found her niche creating toilet-based innovations – but that wasn’t always the former journalist’s plan.
“Dad was an inventor,” says Billie Jo Hohepa-Ropiha, recounting her childhood in the Northland settlement of Moerewa. It’s a US rust belt-style factory town, full of Māori families whose multiple generations have lived and died within a 5km radius of the Affco meat processing plant for the past hundred years.
“Dad worked at Affco, both my grandparents worked at Affco, my mum worked at the local Four Square and I got my first job at the local Four Square.”

Boycotting social media to score anti-racism goal

Boycotting social media to score anti-racism goal
2 hours ago
Rob Harris,
There will be no goal clips, lineup announcements, banter between clubs or even title celebrations.
Four days of silence across Twitter, Facebook and Instagram by soccer leagues, clubs and players in England began on Friday in a protest against racist abuse that has been adopted more widely.
Such is the anger across the game, it means that if Manchester City clinches the Premier League trophy on Sunday it will not celebrate the title on social media.
There was initially a joint boycott announcement by the English Football Association, Premier League, English Football League, Women’s Super League, Women’s Championship as well as player, manager and referee bodies, anti-discrimination group Kick It Out and the Women In Football group. Ahead of the boycott other English sports including cricket, rugby, tennis and horse racing said they would fall silent on social media. FIFA, UEFA and the Premier League’s British broadcasters also said they wouldn’t post online across four days.

Daily review 05/03/2021

So today I have had:
a txt alert 10 min after the local Tsunami Sirens started in my Community, about a half hour after the last quake that put my region in harms way. Excellent work
a txt alert once it was deemed safe to return home, gratefully received.
a PM begin a PRESS Conference (not a Covid briefing) of all the days happenings detailing some of todays important issues
an announcement of the carefully thought out by experts decision to complete the full 7 days lockdown as advertised (some people criticised the shortness of the previous 3 day lockdown)
Some people just love a good cheese with their half empty WHINE.

if it is the failure of the left to deliver this.
Yes I agree with you, the left has been way too timid on this. To be fair a UBI would be a
dramatic reform and any govt would consume a great deal of political capital getting it over the line. And until this past few post-COVD months there has never been a Labour govt in a strong enough position to do this.
But the ground has shifted – it's my sense that NZ right now would be more receptive to the idea than at any time in my life.
Perhaps the most pernicious effect of our conventional targeted benefit welfare (and the one that personally first clued me into the whole idea of a UBI over 20 yrs ago) is what happens when you try to transition

Trigger-happy people are dangerous, guns shoot people and males get high on guns more than females. Police tried the careful approach to a guman in Aramoana and lost out.
There has to be a better program for these 'lost boys' sent away from home by the sleazy-peazy Australian government wanting to slide out of their failures to integrate people. We are much the same here, but we haven't the option to pass the parcel. So let's have a sensible program, and give them something to ground them here, ability to turn their lives around and have a regular earning job and still keep in touch with there. Perhaps if the rehab was successful some returnees could help in working with our crims here on the basis 'If I can remake my life so can you'. And bring in a visa system so we can keep track of what goes from here to there and vice versa. It would help if we knew how much vice is travelling over the Tasman!

An Aucklander who spent six minutes at a store where a Covid-19 case was working had to wait nearly eight hours on the phone to get advice from Healthline.
Even if this item isn't correct in every detail it illustrates cracks in the Covid management policy widening. Are front-line workers being properly paid and rested? Are investigators really on top of their job keeping up with the urgency needed, that was shown earlier on? NZ can't afford to be complacent. Recently one student was phoned a number of times without success, and a visit to the house wasn't made. In the meantime the virus was being spread.

It seems that the Springbok tour protests in 1981 had a deep and abiding effect on David Seymour, even though he would not be born until two years later.
He was clearly affected by the experience or lack thereof and has clearly harboured a deeply felt opposition to apartheid ever since.
But regrettably his deeply felt opposition to apartheid is not matched by his understanding of what it involves.  Because he has confused the ability of part of the electorate to refuse to allow meaningful representation of Maori with the gross suppression of rights based on race.
