US first: Tacoma Power's electrofuels tariff goes into effect from April

st April, making Tacoma, Washington the perfect place for the production of green hydrogen.
The new, lower cost tariff – the nation’s first pilot rate – is designed for industrial producers of electrofuels, such as hydrolysers that produce green energy, to take Tacoma Power’s carbon-free electricity and produce hydrogen or hydrogen-rich compounds that can be used to store electricity for later use.
With the approval of this rate in December 2020, Tacoma Power became the first consumer-owned utility in the nation to offer a rate specifically designed to capture the operational and social benefit of this technology.
Under the rate schedule terms, Tacoma Power said it has the option to curtail electricity consumption during times of high market prices or other electrical system need, making it much more affordable to provide power to all customers. ....

Taxes in the Portland region are getting so burdensome and complex, larger businesses and higher-income households are thinking of moving away.
That was the warning from a panel of tax experts who spoke to the Portland Business Alliance members at its monthly forum on Wednesday, Jan. 20. Maine government workers have reduced their car travel by 1 million vehicle miles a week since the start of the pandemic, thanks to the rapid, wholesale adoption of telework policies.
The preliminary data are opening an unexpected window on the future of telecommuting and its potential to deliver substantial reductions in global warming pollution.
Last year, before anyone heard of COVID-19, Maine’s Legislature authorized a comprehensive analysis of telework’s potential costs and benefits for state government and its employees. But as the research project got underway, the pandemic hit, and by April of this year some 85 percent of the state government’s workforce excepting public safety positions was suddenly working from home. ....
