Oregonians need a bit more potty training, according to state lawmakers.
After years of angst and unnecessary costs for local governments, Oregon became the second state in the nation this year to require do not flush labels on the disinfectant, personal care, make-up and baby wipes commonly sold in the bathroom aisle.
There s no such thing as a flushable wipe, says Clean Water Services chief of staff Mark Jockers, even the ones that say they re flushable.
The Washington County utility purifies more than 65 million gallons of wastewater a day for over 610,000 customers and the agency s wipe woes have only intensified since March 2020, when stay-home orders and toilet paper shortages triggered a significant jump in the pre-moistened towelettes clogging sewer lines. ....

Solutions to houselessness
We ve all witnessed an increase in houseless individuals and camping throughout the region. Fortunately there is hope on the horizon.
The 2018 voter-approved affordable housing bond is delivering $116 million to strengthen the county s Housing Services Department. These investments, along with those allocated to Beaverton and Hillsboro, will create 1,316 affordable housing units throughout the county over the next five to seven years. Work is underway, with two affordable housing complexes opening by the end of this year.
The second glimmer of hope was delivered last May, as voters approved a once-in-a-generation commitment to fund supportive housing services. These dollars will provide rental assistance, job training, mental health and substance use disorder treatment and other programs that help the chronically homeless stay housed. The funds will be available beginning this July and we have been hard at work to ensure expanded services ....

May 7th, 2021 will mark 30 years of continuous water-quality monitoring in the Tualatin River for the USGS Oregon Water Science Center.
The water-quality monitor in the Tualatin River at Oswego Dam (station 14207200) was installed in May, 1991 as part of a cooperative study between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Clean Water Services the primary wastewater and stormwater management utility in the Tualatin River basin. A large water-quality monitoring network in the basin has grown from that initial study to support a wide range of USGS studies that have provided foundational science for improved basin-wide management of water resources. Although the USGS has monitored streamflow and water temperature at many sites for much longer than 30 years, it is extremely rare to have a continuous dissolved-oxygen record for such a long period of time ....
