BRIEFING NOTES - (1) Uganda; (2) Viet Nam

1) Uganda
We are deeply concerned by
the deteriorating human rights situation in Uganda ahead of
parliamentary and presidential elections scheduled for 14
January and the challenges this situation may pose not only
for voting day itself, but also for the post-electoral
period.
In the run-up to the election, numerous human
rights violations have been reported, including of the
rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and
participation, as well as arbitrary deprivation of life,
arbitrary arrest and detention, and torture. Between 18 and
20 November, at least 54 people were killed during riots and
protests in at least 7 districts across the country over the ....

US Urges Vietnam to Release Convicted Journalists

The United States has called on Vietnam to release all people "unjustly detained" and to allow individuals "to express their views freely, without fear of retaliation," according to State Department principal deputy spokesperson Cale Brown.

The statement came out Thursday after Vietnam delivered "harsh sentences" at a quick trial Tuesday in Ho Chi Minh City to three members of the Independent Journalists Association (IJAV). Pham Chi Dung was sentenced to 15 years in prison and Nguyen Tuong Thuy, and Le Huu Minh Tuan were sentenced to 11 years each.

Authorities in Vietnam are ramping up their crackdown on dissent just weeks before the Communist Party’s national congress, with the jailing of prominent journalist Pham Chi Dung on Tuesday (Jan 5) just the latest in a string of sentences handed down to critics of the state.
Before his arrest, Dung was chairman of the Independent Journalists Association of Vietnam, a group he founded that has advocated for press freedom in the country since 2014 yet is considered an illegal organisation by Hanoi. ....

Rising global repression threatens democracy

Punch Newspapers
Sections
Published 7 January 2021
THERE is a growing concern that the world is increasingly tending, dangerously and precipitously, towards systemic repression and suppression of democratic rights, free speech and closure of the civic space. This is unacceptable in a just society. There are disturbing daily reports of illegal arrests, arbitrary detention, spurious sentencing and rising brutality against journalists and rights activists making just demands for political reforms, accountability and transparency on their governments across the world, especially in Africa and Asia. This bodes ill for the world. It should be resisted by every lover of democracy and open government. ....
